Simply a thread for games you think looked fantastic due to impressive looking sprite work. Images would be great of course if you are able. Here's a few from the Super Famicom: Wonder Project J - large sprites with a real cartoonish quality Front Mission - has basic looking map backgrounds but the sprites have really effective use of colour Clock Tower - lots of darks, creates a real atmosphere

WPJ has pretty excellent animation with a really expressive player/player "pet" sprite. Maybe that game had some influence on Tamagotchi too?
Clock Tower is one that's tricky to translate to MD/GEN for example due to the more subtle and dark shading, something I noticed when trying a conversion before. Perhaps with shadow/highlight mode used on MD which adds more shades to the standard 9-bit palette.

Oh, awesome, let me see if I can get all these right - going left, right, top to bottom:
Actraiser Gradius III Legend of the Mystical Ninja Link to the Past Super R-Type Super Ghouls N Ghosts Axelay Contra 3 The Magical Quest Kiki Kaikai Street Fighter II Super Aleste Tiny Toons Adventures Turtles in Time Actraiser 2 Aladdin Batman Returns Mega Man X Rainbow Bell Adventures R-Type 3 Super Empire Strikes Back Ganbare Goemon (4?) Ogre Battle Twinbee Turtles Tournament Fighters Secret of Mana
btw - if this does step on the toes of your other thread omma I can bin it and post there, but I don't think most of these qualify as looking like next gen, just nice looking games.

Top marks! That's Goemon 2, not 4. Pretty much all of them were named so you can right click and check the title actually. No that's just fine, that one's more general anyway... and at the same time more specific like you said.

Pretty much most Irem games and every Nazca Corporation game ever. Also those Euro-games like Flink, Puggsy, Lionheart etc. Can't remember the name of that famous European pixel artist.

Wonder Project J was super impressive to me when it got released! Here's two that I've always loved for aesthetic. Darkstalkers looks especially beautiful with higher resolution and hand-drawn animation transferred to 2-D gaming sprites.

Great thread so far. 16-bit games have an aesthetic quality that's unmatched IMO. I see a SNES game and immediately think "Yeah, that's what a video game is supposed to look like."
I was playing Batman (NES) the other day and I'm always impressed at how great the game looks. Great animation on the characters and in the cutscenes. It's a minor thing but I really love how Batman crouches a bit to gain momentum before he jumps. You don't jump instantly because of that and in a lesser game people would criticize it as unresponsive, but something about it here feels so natural. Great use of color and shadow too.

Batman had some nice background animation at times too, and the NES sequel looks plain 16-bit at times if not better than some earlier MD/GEN and PCE games. Alien Soldier (and other Treasure game) bosses look kinda goofy but in a cool way and that you don't see as much of nowadays.

Few more SNES games X-Men Mutant Apocalypse has some nice big enemy sprites, the Jim Lee inspiration is very clear. Always remember this boss impressing me in Wild Guns Adventures of Batman & Robin looks as close to the animated series as you could possibly hope for Super Punch Out uses oversized sprites to exaggerate enemy characteristics, adding humour, whilst also enabling the player to better read their 'tells'
