The original genre-pioneering Dragon Quest was released in Japan 35 years ago. The dynamic trio of Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyama have been on board since the very beginning. Toriyama and Sugiyama were already established stars, with Horii becoming one as a result of the success of the original game. Sales of the original game were initially slow, but soon picked with subsequent write-ups in Jump Magazine. Today, there have been 11 main-line games, with a 12th one one the way. Not to mention the numerous spin-offs.
So happy 35th anniversary to Japan's favorite, Dragon Quest. Thank you Toriyama for your artwork, thank you Sugiyama for all your memorable music, and thank you Horii for your leadership that helped shape this franchise into what it is today.

Also announced were an offline version of X and a DQXII. I wonder if offline X will get localized since the series is still somewhat patchy with them. I'm still shocked that Switch DQ Heroes pack hasn't been released outside Japan.

The original Dragon Quest is such a pure experience, I love it.

Happy 35th DQ. A very simple but effective and addictive game. Now that I have some more experience with 8-bit RPGs, I can say that despite its simplicity, it's very well designed.
I wish the original versions of the older DQ games would get rereleased some time, but other than that the franchise seems to be in a pretty good state. Tons of games getting released and western releases are now the norm. We're even getting some orchestral music in-game here and there.
