Anyone know what was the first confirmed example of this?
The earliest I can think of were how you could combine certain Konami MSX games (i.e. Gradius 2 with Salamander).

Does importing Wizardry 1 (1981) parties into Wizardry 2 (1982) count? And that isn't just a bonus feature, it's pretty much required to beat the game.

Yeah I think that's the earliest example (MSX). Not sure how old game genie carts and the like are.

Wizardry sort of does and doesn't count, depending on how you look at it. On one hand, you did need a Wizardry 1 party just to play Scenario 2. On the other hand, Scenario 1 and 2 are technically separate programs with their own executable file that can't be combined directly. If we're talking about importing characters, Hellfire Warrior, the sequel to Temple of Apshai, was originally released in 1980 (obviously not counting the fact that both Apshai and Hellfire Warrior received 2 expansion packs each). In terms of 2 separate games directly combining into a single program, I can't think of any other than Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Might and Magic: World of Xeen

I don't think Wizardry I+II+III counts in this context. The "sequels" are designed as expansion packs that require the original game. They can't be played as standalone titles.
An actual example of this would be Summer Games II which can be combined with the events from the prequel if you own both games.

Was t this the case with the geomon games on gba and DS? If you have the gba cart in at the same time as the DS cart it would unlock some stuff.
