I thought this would be a good companion thread to the launch day purchases thread.
If you got a game system some time after launch, what are some specific games that finally made you decide to upgrade.
Dreamcast - Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. I saw this in an arcade on vacation during the summer it was released and was blown away by the amount of characters and the insanity of the 3 on 3 action. I was lukewarm on the Dreamcast before this, but I'm really glad I picked it up because I enjoyed my time with it.
Playstation 2 - Grand Theft Auto III. A friend of mine in high school had a New Year's Eve party which amounted to about a dozen of us dorky guys hanging around at his house and watching Dirty Work. I noticed he had this game and a PS2. I hadn't played either yet so I asked if I could. We took turns passing the controller long and seeing who could make their reign of carnage last the longest. It was seriously tons of fun and I knew I had to have it. I actually sold my Dreamcast and all my games, plus a bunch of valuable SNES games to get my PS2....Sort of wish I just picked up more hours at work instead for a few weeks....
Wii - Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I'm not the biggest fan of Smash, but I really got caught up in the hype for this one. I thought the initial trailer with the choir singing in Latin was the incredibly cool. I would wake up every day and check the official website because they would showcase a feature (character, item, stage etc.) every single day. I ended up being slightly disappointed with the game - as with all Smash games I get pretty bored once I unlock all the characters, but I'm glad I finally got my Wii.

I got the Gamecube bundled with Wind Waker (and the Ocarina of Time bonus disc, which was a great bonus indeed). This was gonna be the ultimate Zelda-experience for me, the art-style and the sailing aspect looked very intriguing. Since seeing Link's Awakening's opening I was hoping for a Zelda game with sea travel. And like Link's Awakening, WW promised whimsy and warmth in terms of tone. In the end I was let down by the sailing, which felt too bland and uneventful. And the Triforce-hunt made me stop playing for a long time, until I finally picked it up again and finished it. I loved the atmosphere and most of the dungeons, but overall I can't love the game as much as I'd like to.
Additionally to the bundle I also got Metroid Prime, which was another game I was very much looking forward to. Again, mostly a great game with a wonderful atmosphere, but burdened by a few drawn out sections (Phazon Mines was one of them, I think) and a tiresome fetch quest towards the end (though nowhere near as bad as Wind Waker's). This really was the time when reviewers and customers would put way too much emphasis on "game length". And Nintendo certainly seemed eager to meet those "needs" by artificially inflating their games.
edit:
1000ths post - my work here is done! I shall never post again. Yeah, I'm obviously a hypocrite.

I noticed with Playstation I always end up getting the Naughty Dog game right away. I played the demo to Crash 2 at a store it was my first time playing the console. Ended up loving it and gotten the PS1 and Crash 1/2 the following birthday. PS2 it was Jak and Daxter. It wasn't the only reason I wanted a PS2 (Final Fantasy X was my tipping point). PS3 by that time it was tradition to own a Playstation. Guess what? Uncharted being one of the games I wanted to play. PS4, I got the Slim bundle with Uncharted 4.
I didn't play Last of us yet, ironically. It is in my backlog.
PSP I bought it for the hype of owning a Playstation handheld. Ridge Racer, Lumines were early titles I gotten. Vita it was Gravity Rush.
=====
Nintendo platforms, usually it is something I own right away for when the latest Mario and Zelda comes along. Third party-wise, I did want a Wii right away for Trauma Center Second Opinion.
======
XBOX I gotten the bundle with JSRF/Sega GT 2002. All the Sega titles made me cave to buy one. I ended up loving Project Gotham Racing right away too.

PS2 - also GTA3. I've soured on the game now having gone back and played the games story through (the missions are all over the place in terms of polish, difficulty spikes, design etc), however at the time it was a perfect digital playground. I remember spending time just sat in the car, driving around, listening to the radio stations. Really it was a wonderful escapism experience. Vita - I was taking a road trip of the States one year and wanted something to play on the journey and so after some research decided on a Vita. The biggest draw at the time was the PS Classics library. I was gifted the system a few weeks before the trip for my birthday and was quick to download Final Fantasy IX. Unfortunately some PS1 games don't control too well on the Vita due to the number of buttons, but I had no problems with FFIX, and found it was a great way to experience the game. Except that I kept getting told off for missing all the scenery outside - but who hasn't seen a bridge before, or a rock. PC Engine - I discovered it with the Wii virtual console (which was in turn my biggest selling point for the Wii itself - though I did of course get that at launch. No queueing btw). There was slim pickings on the Wii launch and PC Engine was pretty well represented. After picking up and enjoying some nice games I did some research, and the main decision maker was the Taito support. That there were ports of some old childhood favourites that I'd not been able to go back to in years; Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story; was the push I needed to put down the cash for a system. The New Zealand Story port disappointed me, but the PCE version of Rainbow Islands was pure gold (or a fabulous rainbow even). I also got really into Don Doko Don and Parasol Stars, which I'd only dabbled with in the past. Anyway, the platform ended up as one of my favourites, and at one point I had hundreds of games for it, though I narrowed that down in the last year or so.

My dad bought a Dreamcast for Shenmue, but the only time I personally bought something completely because of a single game was a GameCube for Twilight Princess since I missed my chance for a launch Wii.
My other non-launch consoles, there was usually something that tipped things but wasn't exclusively a system seller. For the GBA it was FF: Dawn of Souls. I'd been planning on getting a DS Lite, but I ended up getting it somewhat on a whim with Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin. For the PS2, it was sort of for Rogue Galaxy, but I got the actual system from a roommate in lieu of utilities one month because he'd moved on to a PS3 with BC. RG had just come out, but I still could have used it even though it wasn't technically mine. The real question mark for me is the PSX as I have literally no recollection of why or even when I got it! It might have been for FFIX since there was never a PC port.

SNES - Much of the roster of announced games - Super Mario World, Simcity, Actraiser, Final Fight, F-Zero. Final Fantasy 2(IV). So much appeal.
N64 - While I did pick up Mario 64 at launch, Star Fox 64 and Zelda:Ocarina of Time was what I was waiting for.
Saturn - Dragon Force
Playstation - Street Fighter Alpha. Wow, a just about perfect arcade conversion! I would pitch in with a group of friends, and rent a Playstation, Tekken, Ridge Racer, and Street Fighter Alpha from Blockbuster video, and we'd be up till 2 AM playing through the games.
Playstation 2 - Gran Turismo 3.
Wii - Wii Sports and Twilight Princess. Just wanted to play with the remote.
Gameboy Advance - Castlevania:Circle of the Moon. Imported the bloody thing.
Nintendo DS - Castlevania:Dawn of Sorrow.

The only thing that kind of comes close is the DS with Mario Kart DS. I already wanted one, but that's the title that really made me get one asap by selling both of by GBAs. Though it was a bit after the game came out, since I got a DS lite, so it was I think the summer of 2006. Other than that, I've only gotten older systems (for a bunch of games, never really anything specific) or Nintendo systems at launch (because I need to get them eventually anyway). There could potentially be a game that would get me to buy a PS5/XSX I guess. Most games I really want at launch are Nintendo titles, so I don't know what it would be. Maybe DQ or Etrian Odyssey.

PSP- Castlevania the Dracula X Chronicles 3DS-Mega Man Legends 3. Shame Capcom cancelled it! Gamecube-Not a game but the Game Boy Advance Player. I wanted to play the Game Boy series of games on my TV and this was the only way I knew how. Before this I tried ordering some kind of product from some company from some eastern Asian country that can convert my GBA to connect to a TV. They got my order wrong and sent me a product that could makes ones GBA into a TV. I sent it back and had to wait for a order but then I found out online that there has been complaints of this company from the FCC I think so I cancelled my order leading me to get a Gamecube. One thing about this made be see Nintendo in a better light with there consoles. I was bummed out with the N54 as not been a good console and prefer the Playstation series except for Nintendos handhelds. The Gamecube revitalize my interest with Nintedo's consoles and the Gamecube became one of my all time favorite game systems.

Pretty much never get consoles at launch myself. But when I tell most people which games I did get a console for they usually look at me funny.
Nintendo 64- Starfox 64: The SNES original was one of my favorite games for both my love of fighter craft and animals. So naturally when I saw an old gaming magazine mention it was on the way I was ecstatic and pestered my parents for a system. Around November of 1997 I was surprised with an early Christmas present consisting of just those two things.
PlayStation- Ape Escape: This kinda off the mark since there were like 5 games that caught my eye before I got the system and they all made me want the system (mostly the Megaman games). But between the coverage Game Informer gave the game and my time with it at demo station in Walmart Ape Escape was the one I decided to use as my platform to tell my folks to make a PlayStation my next Christmas gift.
Dreamcast- Sonic Adventure: Yeah that's one I don't look back on as fondly lol. For some reason though I just took a liking to the game at the many demo stations I ran across and wanted the system really badly. Thankfully after I was done wasting my time with that mess I discovered the real gems of that platforms library. You know, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis, Bangai-O and Toy Commander. Yes, Toy Commander, don't give me that look.
PlayStation 2- Ace Combat 4 Shattered Skies: As I said I love fighter aircraft and when I saw someone playing this game on one of the tvs in the recreation room of my church of all places I just had to get a PS2 for myself which to this day is probably still the best investment I ever made in a console. I got so much damn mileage out of that ugly VCR.
PlayStation Portable- Wipeout Pure: F-Zero GX had me on a big racing kick and after I exhausted that game for nearly a year and a half I wanted something else to fill that void. I was also really into handheld gaming and of course at the time what the PSP was doing was mighty impressive and Wipeout Pure fit the bill nicely. I ended up saving up for the thing and thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and I believe it was the game I played the most out of all the PSP games I ever bought. Looking back I'm not in love with the game since these days Balistic NG showed me how much more interesting the series was before Wipeout Fusion came and changed the series completely. But still it was a good purchase and even though I kinda neglected my PSP I did have a great time with the games I got for it like the Gradius Collection, Valkyrie Profile, and the Megaman remakes.
Xbox 360-Mass Effect: Not too odd perhaps. I wanted more sci-fi games and this looked to be a perfect fit. And it was, really too this day I think I still find the original ME the most interesting of the series and the system myself I got great mileage out of. The Batman Arkham games, Darksiders, Borderlands, I discovered the Fallout series through 3 and New Vegas.
Nintendo Switch- Hollow Knight: Yep. Sure there were a lot of titles that interested me and eventually I would have got my own but the actual game that had me make the jump was an indie game. That I could have got on Steam. Go ahead, stare at me like I'm insane, I'm used to it. Anyways, I was in the mood for a Metroid like (or I guess we're calling them Search Action now.) and I was really taken with the games art direction, music and tone. Thing is I have this weird complex where I don't like playing 2D games on my PC anymore. Like the idea of hooking up a control to it just feels off. I don't know why, I used to be the emulator king back in the day with my weird Microsoft USB gamepad. So, when I saw it on Switch I just found it to be the perfect opportunity to sell my collection and grab a console for myself.
Yeah I sold my whole collection. I was moving out of state at the exact same time though so it was more because I wasn't going to load all that junk up in my car to take with me half way across the country. I'm not that insane, haha. I'm gald I got the thing though, the Switch has been a good friend as I'm starting to get into handheld gaming once again lately (though currently its my 3DS hogging all the attention)
PlayStation 4- Bloodstained Ritual of the Night: Yeah, once again it was an indie game that made me buy a console. Pretty much the same situation as above, I wanted a Metroidvania (screw Search Action) but the Switch port was a mess so... PS4 it was. Which worked out since I desperately wanted Bloodbourne and a couple other things so that gave me even more excuse. But still, the thing that got me to make the jump was an odd choice I admit lol. Been slowly building up my library and I have a nice collection now. Heck, I grabbed Darksiders III and God of War just today with the sale.
Guess I just need to wait for the next Hollow Knight to come out for PS5 or something so I can get one of those lol. (not likely)

Oh, we're doing weird ones now? I picked up a Japanese PS2 specifically to play a couple of games - one being King of Colosseum, which I'd imagine is a pretty much unknown game nowadays. Being a wrestling game built around combining stars across various promotions it has a neat feature - there's actually two games to pick up, King of Colosseum Red and King of Colosseum Green, with the games separate rosters being combinable into one. Anyway, it's a nice game; essentially a 3D take on Fire Pro Wrestling, but one of those that took a while to get the hang of due to a deeper grappling system. There was a direct sequel as well as a less direct predecessor on PS1 due to the different approach: All Japan Pro Wrestling King's Soul. The other was Fire Pro Z, which was a disappointing entry following D on the Dreamcast so didn't get much play. Fortunately R came along a few years later and was a much more suitable successor; though that one did release worldwide it was around 2.5 years late.
