Insomnia strikes - and you know what that means...another bad excelsior thread. For this thread I'm looking at licensed games we can't believe they made - or to put it another way licensed games that nobody asked for perhaps. Games given in this thread don't have to be bad ones, but should either carry a license you wouldn't expect to translate well to a video game, or be a license people might want to see but used in an unexpected fashion. Here's a few examples I came up with: Mean Girls is hilarious but a Puzzle Quest version of it doesn't exactly sound 'so fetch'. Little Nicky on the other hand isn't hilarious and even the film is incredibly unappealing. I can't imagine anyone wanting this. With Batman the movie being adapted in various forms on different platforms the PC Engine one being a Pac Manesque maze game is really not what people asked for. Not a bad game but really weird.

Wacky Races for the NES is a pretty damn good game at least.
Whenever this topic comes up my mind always jumps to Gilligan's Island for the NES. It's a bizarre quasi adventure game with some action elements. It's not a great game and you kind of wonder who the audience is for a game based on a 20+ year old sitcom. Kids who watched reruns all day? Their parents maybe?

I must have seen every episode of Gilligan's Island at least five times because of reruns. The game always felt like a quick way to ride on the show's popularity in syndication. I'd lump the Rocky and Bullwinkle game in that category too since unlike The Flintstones or The Jetsons for example, there was never any kind of revival series, sequel shows or specials.
As a group, any game based on a product mascot that actually cost money. Those are all so bizarre to me. They're not all bad, but it's so inconceivable to me that there's somehow 7 games based on M&Ms.

This immediately comes to mind
It's an action platformer, where in the first level Tim Allen fights Dinosaurs. I've never played the game myself, but I can only imagine what they were thinking.
Another mention would be Konami's The Simpsons arcade game. It's a good game, but I can't get over that they took a situation comedy and made a beat-em-up out of it.

All of these are great answers so far - keep em coming The thing that strikes me in the M&M's games are how they love to use the same artwork: For another product mascot entry - there's Mission Kellogg's mainpatr - I had to google Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid - it doesn't seem to look like a shmup! davidpacman - There has to be more weird Simpsons games also. At least with Konami's it brought some really nice authentic artwork and music - and more importantly great fun and memories!

Arguably all the Simpsons games are weird minus the Itchy and Scratchy game as the characters do lend themselves to a game and Virtual Springfield since as the name implies, you mainly just visit various locations from a map. Bart's House of Weirdness is a bit in the middle since the premise isn't super weird necessarily, but it's also DOS exclusive for some reason despite being a Konami game.

Not sure whether these should count or not, but the Terebikko games are the first thing to come to mind. Terebikko was a Japanese console released by Bandai where you would watch a VHS, and pick up a telephone connected to the TV every now and again to answer questions asked in the video. (This was also released in the US by Mattel as the See 'n Play video phone.) Because it was published by Bandai, quite a few popular licensees of the day put out a game or two on the system.
Probably the most well-known of these; at least in my circles; is Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo, where the Dragon Team travel through time and visit characters from previous Dragon Ball story arcs. (No subtitles)
In the world of video games, Mario himself got one with Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land. In a weird connection to the previous example, Mario is voiced by Tōru Furuya, who plays Yamcha in Dragon Ball. (English subtitles; albeit hardsubbed on this particular upload)
I also just found one based on the 1990s Moomin anime called Moomin no Sutekina Present, as if the world didn't already have enough Moomin cartoons. (Finnish soft-subs only)

Well, I can't believe they effin made those, so they do count in my book. And if you're tired of Moomins, maybe don't visit Finland. They've got more Moomin products than reindeer
speaking of which:
I honstly think that we actually need more Moomin games - or at least one that is really good. I'm dreaming of a peaceful open-world sandbox Moomin Valley-simulator (Breath of the Wild without violence). And since it has been mentioned lately in another thread, that's also how I'd envision a Totoro game.
edit: Since Bat-Pacman has been mentioned, I've got one that actually does make sense, but still strikes me as a fever dream-like oddity:
First of all "Konami presents" - yes this was indeed published by Konami (but not made by), who are not exactly known for releasing DOS based Point and Click Adventures. And yes, you read correctly: "Point and Click". Now making such a game based on an action-heavy movie wasn't completely unheard of, Lucas Arts' Indiana Jones games come to mind (probably another wtf canditdate, if you think about it). But among all the other sidescrolling action games based on the movie it surely sticks out. I've never actually played it myself, but I have to say: It does look pretty amazing visually and in terms of story and atmosphere it represents the movie much better than any other game adaptation could. It also seems to lean on "detective work" which seems appropriate enough. Though I can't imagine the fight-scenes playing that well (they should've combined it with the SNES game). To this day I'm still amazed this exists, not because it was a bad concept, but rather because it was a good concept that wasn't used enough in the gaming space.
Not weird enough? Okay then, how about chubby isometric Batman?:

There is even going to be a Moonmin exhibit at the National Children's Museum in DC early next year a fact promoted by the Prime Minister of Finland herself! I don't expect Moonmin to suddenly capture the national imagination of the US, but maybe a new game could come out of it.

Frankly, I think it's a shame that the Moomins have become the Finnish Mickey Mouse equivalent. Tove Jansson's work is actually rather thoughtful and deep, especially for children's books. It deserves better than being turned into cheap plastic toys, being printed on sweet wrappers or being used by politicians for PR stunts.
edit: That said, the exhibition sounds neat.

We have a Moomin store in London. Edit - come to think of it I remember going to one in Hawaii so I guess this isn't so special.
Chubby isometric Batman reminds me of Adam West. Perhaps that's what they were aiming for.

Burger King had a series of budget Xbox games you could buy at the restaurants. The most interesting one being a stealth game where you play as the King himself and sneak up on people to give them burgers. It was a weird ad campaign.

Haha! I played Sneak King. It was an easy achievement grabber in the day. Nothing creepy about this game...nope. edit: I misremembered about the achievements. Turns out I was thinking about another classic 360 ad game - Dorito's Dash of Destruction. Gameplay below:
