Hard to believe, man. The game that stunned just about everyone, when they found out they were playing as Raiden for the majority of the game, instead of Solid Snake, not to mention REALLY went hard on cutscenes, even for one on one codec conversations in person.
The AI Colonel was (and still is) very terrifying. In retrospect, I could even tell that it wasn't the real Colonel Campbell. While the real Colonel Campbell may have had his jerkass lying moments (which Snake rightfully called him out for), he at least showed genuine concern and care for him. The AI Colonel, on the other hand, didn't give two craps. Especially the part where Raiden said to him "You and Snake used to be on the same side".

The weird thing about the Raiden switch is that the manual spills the beans about that so it wasn't a surprise to anyone that alway read the manual first first. It's kinda funny especially after Konami went so far as to replace Raiden with Snake in prerelease stuff. I remember opinions being a little mixed at release towards certain elements, but it's definitely held up over time. The cutscene heaviness did get some complaints, but I didn't even notice the last time I replayed it.

One of the funniest parts for me was when you started getting messages from AI Campbell. Running down a gauntlet in Arsenal Gear, nude, with only a fancy aerial kick to defend yourself with as your hands are too busy with covering your manhood. Eerie, transcendental ambient music is playing. And suddenly: Raiden! Turn the game console off right now! The Mission is a failure! Cut the power right now!

In recent years, does anyone else tear up over Snake's post-credits speech? I do. Beautiful piano piece, too.

I'm going to be the voice of some negativity here.
In terms of gameplay the reuse of areas was really annoying and playing it in retrospect its a a very bare and obviously rushed game after the tanker.
The Enemy AI was incredible on release and still looks amazing but I think the increase in the difficulty of the AI means there's a lot more waiting around for alert phases to die down and it takes a longer time for the game to become fun. It's initially very frustrating for most of the game until your skills increase.
As for the cutscenes and codecs. Way too long and way too boring. MGS2 is rightfully praised for it's themes and how forward thinking and relevant they still are but they are presented with such awful writing. There's some absolute howler moments in this game from Otacons crying to the bomb disposal experts admission. There's just some really dumb badly written stuff here. And while some of the bosses fights are excellent there's a few that feel a little unfinished, although none get as bad as MGS4.
I still think it's a game worth playing and there's a lot to enjoy about it but my god does it have some serious flaws.
