Kinda reviving this topic, who here is an afficiendo of 60s anime? I mean, you know, Speed Racer, the original Astro Boy and Gigantor, etc.
I saw Gigantor on Adult Swim not too long ago, and while I wasn't blown away by it, it DID grow on me. How much? I now can't look at anything involving giant robots without drawing a comparison to Gigantor. (Just try playing Xenogears in that light. "Weltall! He's bigger than big!")
I've always been a big Speed Racer fan, ever since I caught an episode on MTV. My only regret is wishing someone would make a decent racing game based on it (I know there have been games, but I don't know how good they've been).
I still need to see Astro Boy.
Biggest thing I have a problem with regarding 60s anime, is that companies seem to feel no need to give them the uncut, subtitled treatment that more modern shows seem to have garnered. I mean please, if we can have unmolested versions of Gatchaman, Robotech, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, and other shows that were skewered for American audiences, then we can have uncut Speed Racer (which was barely skewered at all), Astro Boy, Gigantor (including the Japan-only episodes), and most especially Kimba the White Lion, where the bad dubbing causes the poignancy of the stories to get lost under the unintended hilarity.
Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I've heard of Avatar, but it's not anime--it's an American show with a very anime-esque artstyle.
From what I've heard it sounds decent, but I don't have satellite anymore so I can't watch it unless I rent the DVDs.

Bah. You elitists bastards. If it's drawn in the style of anime, It's anime.

There isn't anything "elitist" about being factually accurate. Drawing a show anime-style doesn't make it anime.
Especially when people are so inconsistent on that point--Inspector Gadget and Rainbow Brite were anime-style too, yet they're still considered just "cartoons."

Yeah, I don't think Avatar could be considered anime, mainly because it's not made the same way that anime is (other than maybe being animated in Korea). Just because it copies the anime stlye doesn't make it anime.

I say that Avatar is as much anime as Teen Titans!

As I said before and will say again, if Teen Titans and Avatar are anime, then Inspector Gadget, Rainbow Brite, and in fact most of DIC's 80s cartoons are anime as well.

And before anyone replies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Powerpuff Girls both got a conversion to anime!

I still want to see the TMNT anime (there were also manga and several gag comics--and the various Konami games actually borrow elements from these comics). I'm not quite so psyched about PPG though.

Being the TMNT fan that I am, I too would love to see the anime version. Also, don't knock the (80's version of) Inspector Gadget, it ruled!(The movies and more modern cartoons, however...). The fact that Don Adams (Maxwell Smart) did Gadgets voice in the original toon only ads to the awesomeness

I wasn't knocking Inspector Gadget--I was simply pointing out that it's an example of a cartoon drawn anime-style, and yet nobody is calling it an anime. Actually, I love IG.
