I love Smash TV! It was one of the first SNES games I ever played, and one of the few decent twin stick conversions and maybe the only one that didn't use a two controller set up. Super fun in two player, but single player does feel a little tedious. I'd go with an A for that, but S in 2P.

It gets an S. Every bit of good as the Arcade, and having the D-pad and four buttons serve as the dual joysticks is a great conversion.

Oh yeah! This is one of the best arcade ports on the system. And looking at Beam Software's track record...this is probably the best thing they ever did! It plays spectacularly, with almost no slowdown and the SNES was the only system at the time that could have hoped to mimic the arcade control setup (discounting the dual controller setup of the NES game). I actually like the buttons for directional shooting moreso than the joystick. A lot less censorship than you'd expect out of a Nintendo game of the era. The bikini girls aren't covered up, you still dismantle the bosses in a gruesome fashion and the enemies explode into gooey chunks! The Verhoven-esque touches like the M.C. comments and the goofy prizes (thousands of toasters) really enhance the experience. It's an A for me.

I really like the game too. It was either our 2nd or third SNES game back as kids and me and my brother played it a lot together. The futuristic game show theme permeates in a way that really adds personality to the action. All the one liners from the host have stuck with me (I'd buy that for a dollar! Big money, big prizes, I love it!). The exploration was a nice addition so playthroughs weren't identical adding to an already decently long action game. Of course, the action itself works really nicely with a good array of powerups and the semi-competitive co-op can add some nice dynamic to how you choose to play.

Seems like a game balanced for 2-player, it gets rather repetitive and eventually brutal in SP I think and I dislike the randomized power ups. The theme and lack of similar games in that era makes it stand out though and yes, the controls work surprisingly well.

Also,Smash T.V. as a whole is probably the most influential game you never about in the sense that Binding of Issac and Hades, among others, straight up copy the structure of Smash T.V.

And in turn of course these indie games influence one another, which has led to a good deal more games of late similar to Smash TV than Robotron where it descended from. By the way mainpatr - thanks for joining in this thread. If you would like to contribute to the weekly rankings feel free to Give this game, along with any others we've covered a ranking. I'm happy to let people work backwards if they joined late or missed a week, and of course anyone can come and go as they please week to week. Next week would be a good week to do it since I will be taking a week off posting a new game. Though, comments without rankings are of course more than welcome contributions here as well.

Smash TV - Rank B
Reasonable arcade port. The set-up always reminded me of that Arnold Schwarzenegger dystopian future classic: The Running Man. A gameshow of death, mayham, and destruction. It always made me wonder... where do they get all the people who willingly want to give up their lives for a gameshow? Or all they all android, clones, or robots? Who is wrapping up all the gift present boxes to be collected?
Brisk, non-stop, straight forward action with good, tight controls. Big MONEY. Big PRIZES. I LOVE it!

A century of Transylvanian tranquility is about to come to a shocking end. Once again the mortifying screams of helpless villagers shake the ground as they huddle against new nightmarish horrors unleashed by the Duke of Darkness, Count Dracula. And this time he has a tombstone with your name on it, Simon Belmont.
You must descend into Castle of the Undead and its gruesome ground, accompanied by the most chilling sound effects to ever tingle your spine. Inside, a freshly dug 11 levels maze features the treacherous Terrace of Terror, the dangerous Rotating Dungeon, the Sunken Ruins of Lost Spirits, torture chambers and creature filled caves. Use your whip like a grappling hook and swing past hundreds of traps and a host of ghost freaks, living corpses and hidden goblins. All while dodging or destroying the unpredictable spitting lizards, carnivorous coffins, and more.
Find the concealed weapons needed to defeat everything from eerie phantoms to haunted furniture. Then prepare to find yourself face-to-thing with hideous torments like the Tongue Lasher, the Darkest Knight, the Bone-Afide Horseman and the Granite Crusher. When your nerves get shot, use your password and take a breather. But forge on, Simon Belmont, because if you though Dracula was down for the count, he's only just begun to fright!

Early start this week but spooky season completely crept up on me and it seemed it was time to get it started with some Castlevania action. Super Castlevania is a nice action platformer; a little dated in places, but it is an early SNES game. The atmosphere is what stands out as there's not too many on SNES that take the darker approach, and of course the soundtrack is good enough that I own it on vinyl so that's the real highlight for me. As a full package I'd consider it among the better action platformers on SNES.
Edit: I should note that I didn't grow up with this game (or series) at all, and I think because of that it had much less impact on me than other SNES games.

Super Castlevania IV is my personal favorite Castlevania game. Part of this is SNES bias but I think what wins this game over for me is atmosphere. The castle feels dank and lived in. It's musty, moldy and filled with cobwebs. Like a video game version of a hammer horror film. It even has one of my favorite end battles across the series, despite Dracula not having any sort of crazy demon form. The acid jazz (or whatever) soundtrack is really memorable as well.
I also really enjoy how it plays as well. Simon having a multi-directional whip and better control overall breaks the game and...I don't care! Because it's still really fun! It's probably one of the easier Castlevania games but that doesn't bother me.
It's verrry close to an S for me but that one dungeon level with insta-kill spikes everywhere drives me crazy so I'll restrain myself and leave it as an A.

While I prefer how some later CVs play in some ways I think this was easily the best up to that point. The variety is good and it's full of new ideas. I agree it had excellent atmosphere and music, it doesn't feel as cartoony or over the top as RoB or Bloodlines sometimes do (although they do have better animation and overall spritework) and the buildup before the final fight is very nicely done. This was a game me and a cousin struggled with but eventually succeeded at beating and one of the first SNES games I played extensively, it's a good memory for me.
A
(acid jazz is closer to what Tim Follin was doing around that time, mixed with the beats from Super Adventure Island)

I don't have any particularly strong nostalgia for IV. The sprite work is a little wonky in my opinion, and the eight way whip upsets the balance of the subweapons. It's also a little too backloaded with the opening stages being too dull and a little boring. It's fun and a good early SNES game, but it would have been nice to get a more refined follow up. I'd still give it a B.
