For me the localisation really lets Illusion of Gaia down. The storyline suffers, leaving characters that are difficult to connect with. The action is nice enough, but it's never really expanded upon and it feels like there's no advancement for most of the game. Though there's some nicely drawn artwork there's an inconsistency in styles when transforming between Will and his alter egos which I find quite jarring; Freedan in particular looks like he's from an entirely different game. Other than that I don't find the game altogether memorable and so I'm going to give it a C.

I agree with some many of these criticisms, but I gave Soul Blazer an A and I like Illusion of Gaia more so I guess I'll go with an A also. I mainly like that it encourages you to defeat every enemy in a room by making that the main way upgrades are given.

Back in the distant past (way back-line when "rock and roll" was just rock and fast food was dinner you couldn't catch), lived two cave dudes named Joe and Mac. Whether it was dinosaur demolition or pterodactyl hang-glidin', life for the boys was pretty cool. Cool, that is, until a bogus bunch of neanderthal nerds crashed their village and scared off all the cave-babes. Now the cave-babes are out there- SOMEWHERE, lost and reeeeally lonely... so what are you waitin' for? It's up to Joe and Mac to get 'em back.

This game is one of those cases where the devs realized they couldn't do a pure arcade port justice so they consoleized it a bit. So you now have a Mario World style world map, you can switch weapons on the fly, and there's more bonuses and secrets, but overall it can't really match the intensity of the arcade game. It looks pretty nice in screenshots and has some very large sprites but runs sort of slow and chuggy like a lot of early SNES games do. It's censored a bit, as the cave women have simply been frightened out of the village by the neandrathals instead of being dragged out by their hair (though this probably was done to save on memory as much as anything). Also for some reason the final boss was changed to a crazy dino-human hybrid to a...silly cartoon devil? I dunno man. Whatever happened to the caveman genre anyway? There used to be tons of these games.
This one is a C.

Arcade version is better. Too many questionable changes.

C sounds about right. I think I tried to play through this last year, but got too bored to finish it. The sequel is better and there's a reason that's on NSO and the first isn't.

I suspect Nintendo Japan/America found the original Arcade version's intro offensive. It depicted cavewomen, including a large one, being kidnapped by rival cavemen. That may have been why it was altered in their version.

The end is pretty dodgy as well with the larger cave woman chasing after the two guys and them running away.

On trying to play the game a bit more to refresh my opinion, I'm afraid I don't really like it. I find it too finnicky. I'm going with a D.

Joe & Mac, Rank C
Good enough to be a co-op game, to rent and play on a rainy day. It's a bit repetitive, so it isn't much of a game that I care to replay. Colorful graphics and big sprites, as an early gen SNES game, with dinosaurs! Caveman ninja?! What a selling point to any kid, especially with 2-player simultaneous action. The one thing that still sticks with me is the SNES version's boss music. Simple and catchy, that seemed to want to have lyrics along the lines of: Joe and Mac! J-J-J-J-Joe and MAC! Joe and Mac! J-J-J-J-Joe and MAC!

This one made some changes that made sense for a console port and I'm a sucker for hub maps, but also several missteps like removing the charge attack, making some enemies more spongy, double tap to dash and slower jumps. It's also easier and a bit less intense than the MD port, which I prefer slightly once again. minirevver.weebly.com/joe--mac-caveman-ninja-snes.htmlIt's a about a C- for me.

I did think that the idea of a caveman ninja was absolutely hilarious when I encountered it in the wild in an arcade
