Picked this up again and finished it just now. Won't lie it was a bit frustrating to get back into but I guess I had to unlearn some muscle memory I got from the last Mario game I played. Like I said I would rather sit down with this than Lost Levels any day but it is definitely not my favorite. I actually liked it much more early on and found the level design pretty clever but once you get past world 4 it just gets kinda annoying and mean and doesn't really lean into its mechanics much. Like you may as well not bother picking up anything and just avoid all the overly aggressive enemies and demands more precision platforming when you feel way more slippery than usual. Some of the bosses were awful too.
But the remake looks gorgeous and I can't help but let the nostalgia get to me. I did enjoy revisiting it even if I wasn't wowed by it. I'll give it a B+.

It definitely feels like this and SMB3 are the main attractions on All-Stars (and World, if you have that compilation). They are bigger, but the graphical updates are also a lot better.
I like SMB2 quite a lot. It was never really a particular favorite until I picked it up on NES (FC really) a couple years back. The platforming is not as physics-based as the usual Marios, but it makes up for it with the pick-up mechanics and slightly more convoluted/unpredictable level design. There's some tricky stuff later on, but it becomes a lot easier once you learn how to do the roulette minigame, though I don't remember how that one works on the SNES.
Anyway, assuming the game is as close to the NES original as I think (there's saves/continues now which aren't really necessary, but it's a bit longer than SMB1, so I'll allow it), I'll give it the same grade as SMB1. I prefer SMB1, but that game didn't make the jump to SNES as well. This game, on the other hand, looks way better here, though the overworld theme doesn't really capture the original's vibe. So I'll give it an A, but on the NES, SMB1 would outclass SMB2.

I don't have anything new to say about the actual gameplay, but 2 on NES is the game in the original trilogy I gave the most specific nostalgia. A lot of memories as a six and seven year old of idling away summer days in between going to the playground. It's the perfect game for times like that. I'll go all the way to S although objectively it's more like a B+/A-

Again, do I really have to say anything about this? A.

I'll be a bummer here and say I don't like a lot of the aesthetic changes to the AS version of SMB 3 and I think I'd rather play the original...but even in this state it's still easily an A.

I feel the same way. It just doesn't look right even without comparing to the original. It kinda creeps me out a little bit so I'm going with B.

The colours are a little garish to me. Still, it's Super Mario Bros 3, which I have as some as my earliest memories - even if that's the NES version. It's really the selling point on the original packaging of All Stars. I can't go less than an A.

Finished this the other day. I actually really love the way this one looks and sounds, particularly the backgrounds that have a vibrant yet soft touch to them. In fact its the only means I have ever played 3 and I need to remind myself it was an NES game first lol.
Its not my favorite classic Mario (that goes to World) but definitely right up there. I'll go with A.

SMB All Stars - Super Mario Bros 3 Rank - A+
Again, saving progress makes beating this game a lot more digestible. It can be pretty rough in terms of time-consumption, playing it straight through without the warp whistles. A lot of love was packed into making Mario 3 much more distinct than the previous games, and all the little details show: from the one-level Kuribo's wind-up shoe, to the seemingly random appearance of the gold coin ghost ship. But killing the sun with a turtle shell, the giant and cloud worlds, and taking on an armada of koopa ships and a squadron of airships makes for such a colorful game.
My only gripe with the game is that the Tanuki and Hammer Bros. suit isn't more plentiful to use!

My only gripe with the game is that the Tanuki and Hammer Bros. suit isn't more plentiful to use! I used to use an action replay to start the game with the hammer suit. Sometimes the frog suit too but that was always doomed to failure - an interesting challenge though.

I'm going to rate this an X+ tier game in a desperate attempt to get the game's average to the S tier.
Anyway SMB3 is one of the best whatever version you play. I've talked about this game and its importance to me (specifically this version) so much, that I'll just leave it at that - it's a brilliant game. I always liked the All-Stars graphical upgrade for this. It most looks like what I think of when I think classic Mario. It's not as archaic as SMB1/TLL on NES, but not as weird as their All-Stars versions. And it doesn't look as unique as SMB3 NES or SMW. It just looks like a Mario game. Even if the graphics sucked on this one, they'd have to really fuck them up to make SMB3 anything but a 10/10 game.

Perfect water levels, and a freaken handicap for most land levels, especially castles. I definitely doomed to fail after any swimming stage.
