This is one of those games that is better than what you'd expect when you see the license. Of course, if you're familiar with developer Natsume it's not so much of a surprise. The game plays somewhat like a light version of their Ninja Warriors game. It doesn't reach close to those heights, of course. There's a lack of moves and nearly no enemy variety which leads to repetition. There's only a handful of stages here, and they won't offer challenge to anybody here I would imagine, but it's well targeted at its young player base which cannot be said for all kids' licensed games. There's a welcome change in playstyle at the very end. On a whole this makes for a nice afternoon of light entertainment.

This is a competent but average beat-em-up. It does look pretty nice and the game does a good job of capturing the personalities of each individual teenager in their animation. I guess it's too bad they all share the same ranger sprite but that shouldn't be too surprising I guess. Pretty good music with a great rendition of the theme song. The general gameplay is pretty fun but feels a bit shallow compared to something like Turtles in Time or Final Fight. The Megazord levels are fun and I wish there were more of them. I was never a Power Rangers kid so I don't have tons of personal affection for the license or anything like that though. I think the sequel is a bit better, especially with 2 player mode. C is right on the money.

This game is even worse if you're a fan of Power Rangers! It feels absolutely nothing like the show unless I missed all the episodes where the Putties had weapons. It doesn't use anything easily recognizable as a boss to the point that I had to look up if they even appeared in it. It's an F as a Power Rangers game and a D as a brawler. It's way too easy to the point that it's mindless. The boring unsuited forms get all the unique sprites and then the Rangers play almost identically minus Pink and Blue. I'll split the difference and go D-.

Quick question going forward. The last few weeks have had lower participation, which I know is due the coverage of more niche games more than anything else. I like to include a bit of everything across various game styles and popularity to give a more complete picture and not limit the thread to the usual classics. That said, I do wonder whether this is a little exclusionary? Would you guys rather I continue in a similar fashion or simply focus on games that more people will have played?

I've played a pretty good chunk of the SNES library so I'm down for anything. I do enjoy reading people's thoughts on these old games so if we think better known games would get more participation, then maybe you could try that?

I don't think it's a bad idea to keep some more obscure games in the mix if only to highlight lesser known gems.

I think it may be a case of spreading them out a bit and making they're more interesting either hidden gem or just unique games. Thanks. I'll see if anyone else has any suggestions also. Thanks for the continued participation, both.

I have more than a soft spot for Gremlin, many staff of whom would go on to work at Sumo Digital. I may or may not have mentioned that their offices were particularly local to me, to the point that I would pass them on a daily basis. Beyond a sense of local pride, however, the name holds strong association with the racing genre, and with good reason. Top Gear in my opinion is one of the very best racers on the SNES. It takes that old school behind the vehicle perspective letting the scenery pass by with a real sense of speed. There's a nice bit of strategy to when you use Nitro boosts and make pitstops to add a little depth to an otherwise arcade title. Do I even have to mention the music? OK, there's only a few tracks, but what's there is iconic and memorable.

I hadn't really played this first game before, only listened to the OST which is mostly great if a bit short. It made a so-so first impression tbh - pausing on select? Accelerating on X? No full screen in 1P?? No automatic transmission? I can accidentally skip refueling and now I just lost the race?! After realizing my mistakes I'm enjoying it more, it's pretty fun. The speech bubbles add some personality, nitro is great of course (I think Super Hang-On introduced these), having four different cars surprised me and the pit stop mechanic is interesting even if actually using it pissed me off several times. Still there are moments where it turns into a bit of a choppy mess I think, and they seem to get pretty frequent about three countries into it. The hit detection also pissed me off at times, I could swear both me and other cars just passed right through each other at times. I'll finish Japan and I think I'm content with that, I mean for playing on easy it's pretty damn hard to get first place just a few courses in. It becomes more like a battle with the CPU rival on the bottom viewport. Will try 2-player at some point though.
C+
I don't mind more obscure games (or even MD and PCE games) at all, I just wasn't that interested in these previous two.

Fun racing sim with GREAT music. It's a bit rough around the edges but the game is fun enough overall that I can overlook it. I wish 1P mode wasn't in split screen though. The spiritual sequel Horizon Chase Turbo is pretty fun as well. I think it's a B.

Top Gear is a B for me. It's pretty good with a nice number of tracks, but it's a little bland at the same time. Somehow the sequels only get worse which is so bizarre to me.

How long can a man hold a grudge? When I first took home Street Fighter II all the way back in 1992 it was like magic. No. It was like falling in love. But I was too young to know that's what it was. I'd played the arcade but getting the game home in its fine conversion was something else. I spent way more of my free hours than I'd dare to guess playing, over and over. Arcade mode. VS. It was as close to perfect as you could ask.... except for that glaring omission - the absence of playable boss characters. Street Fighter II Turbo then was only going to be an improvement. I was going to leave my first love for that younger model that would do things my old wouldn't. I couldn't wait for the PAL release, though it was just weeks removed. The Japanese version had to be mine. On the release date I traded my copy of Street Fighter II. Yes, that's right, I traded my love away for this cheap thrill. I got it home. Initial excitement was met as soon as I saw that speed selection and then further heightened just seeing first glance of those extra fighters on the selection screen. This was my life from now on. I was content. Or so it seemed. Play went smoothly at first. Top speed.... hmmm.. a little too fast. Knock it down a peg here and there. Fair enough. But after a few matches it hit. Crash. Everything onscreen turned to large blocky badness. No worries. Reset. Next match... same again. And again. And again. The game had some compatibility issue with my converter. I'd traded my love away for a one night stand that ended the way most of those do as I'd later learn.... disappointment. Yes, SFII Turbo was returned the next day. My impetuousness from my youth didn't think to wait for the local release, and to trade back would mean losing money. Besides which I felt a bitterness toward this game. This game had stolen my childhood innocence of all things. Yes, I have played it since. I feel my disappointment rushing back every time. The speed isn't right; these air moves are silly, or rushed, I think. But honestly, I just long for my cartridge of Street Fighter II and regret giving into my gaming lust. How long can a man hold a grudge? 10955 days and counting.

Sadly, I don't have a fun anecdote about SF II Turbo. Like I mentioned for the original, I don't have any nostalgia for SF until Super. This one is definitely better than the original, but Super is still the best of all.
