I find the thought of some folks buying yet another piece of hardware just to play a new set of roms ridiculous. Easily those could have been sold physically or via download to owners of the previous Mega Mini - at least had they designed that system for such a purpose in the first place. Hackers win, again.
That said, so far that rom set is rather interesting, some cult classics - Gamefreak's Magical Taruruto-kun is cool.

I feel like the mini console boom has sort of passed? Including some CD games is a good idea as for whatever reason, companies make almost zero effort at giving us legal ways to play these...I still don't see myself buying something like this.

!!!!!
I'm such a sucker for mini's. I'll definitely be getting the Mega Drive Mini 2. I was really hoping for the Sega Saturn Mini announcement, but hey, I'll take Sonic CD with it's original soundtrack.

The boom is past, but Sega still seems to want to keep making them. I guess the Astro City Mini did well enough.
It'll be interesting to see what ends up on it. A lot of the more obvious game were already on the first one. Sewer Shark has never been rereleased so that'd be a fun addition probably only in the NA version. It's such a cheesy game, but if Night Trap could have a semi-revival (it's from the same developer and has the same history), I don't see why Sewer Shark can't.

I am not interested in hacking these things. I just find them neat. I would buy official expansions. Especially ones that are region free because I just know Sega would make Japan only expansion carts if such idea is brought up. It'll be interesting to see what ends up on it. For whatever reason those FMV games manage to escape Sega CD's black hole of release availability. Sega bundled it with Sega CD units, so makes sense to include it here. Without knowing how many CD titles show up, I wouldn't want more than one FMV title on this thing unless I get confirmation of games such as Snatcher or Lunar on board too.

Yeah, I forgot these sorts of things are still big with hardcore fans and collectors. I think I was just comparing them to the NES Mini which seems like EVERYBODY was trying to get ahold of a few years ago.
Snatcher and the Lunar games would tempt me...

We about peaked viable platforms for a Mini right now. N64, Saturn and Dreamcast may be expensive or difficult. Game Boy has potential. TV support made to look like Super Game Boy.
Sega has Master System But let's face it, if they do Master System Mini the backlash from Saturn and Dreamcast fans will riot some more.
Do people want a 3DO mini? I would buy it.

Did they put the previous one's games on steam later, including the Darius port?
It's true that these are very superflous, especially now in supposedly more environment conscious times (which was the case since before the NES mini, not saying right now).

Any previously cancelled games or demakes? Fantasy Zone is the original arcade game with a new port. There's probably 1 or 2 more bonus games. Somebody on Twitter giving a summary of a translated interview and other Japanese comments from the staff. There is a lot to unpack so I'll post the Twitter account. twitter.com/gosokkyu- Mentions 20 of the games will be Sega CD titles.
- The curated list of games for the Genesis side is to appeal to the diehard fans of the platform, while first Mini was designed for broad appeal with all its well known hits.
- It is coming overseas but Japan is a priority at the moment.
- They explored the idea of a Saturn and Dreamcast Mini but deemed it expensive and difficult. Joked that they may make a Saturn Mini cost as much as a new console. 32X was off the table due to duel processors but they claim that if they make progress with 32X support then Saturn is more possible. (note: I think this point emulated releases on console will happen sooner than a mini console)
- They were working on Sega CD emulation without Sega's consent, meaning they are always ahead on predicting Sega's demand often.
- The Mini has the option of toggling between the FM levels of Model 1 and Model 2.
- Darius and Tetris bonus games were "Miracles" due to licensing, the bonus games here won't be "bombshells" (note: I think it means Sega related and not third party).
- Fantasy Zone's new Genesis port is handled by Hideki Konishi aka Hidecade, like Darius was. Supervised by Kazuki Kubota who help with the Shottrigger releases from M2.

So… a bunch of new games were revealed for this. I’m a bit confused, and not very excited for this anymore, unless the EU/US version is different. I would be shocked if these games were the actual western product….
After Burner II Columns III: Revenge of Columns Megapanel Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water Out Run Puzzle & Action: Ichidant-R Splatterhouse 2 Star Mobile Night Striker The Ninja Warriors Starblade
EDIT: I just realised there are even more games being revealed for this, I thought this was it. Phew!

Did we ever get sales figures for the first one that made them think there was a market for an even more obscure version of it?

I didn't see specific figures for it but I do know it was sold out in Japan for several months following launch so it's likely it exceeded expectations in that region.
