Chakan wasn't ever really made into BO:2, some of the character designs were shared (apparently by accident because the same concept artist was used)..or so I believed.
I was fairly sure Chakan barely got beyond planned as no ingame footage ever made it out I thought.

Damn... Whomp 'Em is actually related to Wonder Boy? I never would have guessed that in a billion years. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Great stuff all, Kurt. I've a question to ask that's semi relevant: Is Devil Kings any good? Looks neat enough. Slightly more germane to the article: Would you say that Basara is the better version, or... aw, hell. From what I read, it pretty much is. Dammit, I hate when they omit shit like that. ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Devil Kings/Sengoku Basara is the only game pair in the article I didn't try firsthand and had to rely on research. I didn't enough time to order Sengoku Basara in time for the deadline, so buying Devil Kings would've been a waste of $20. I might grab one of them if I find them cheap though.

Wasn't Legendary Axe 2 not at all related to the first one?

I thought that was the case too, but then I read a bit, and they are, in fact, meant to be related. "Legendary Axe" was "Makyo Densetsu" and "Legendary Axe II" was "Ankoku Densetsu". I ran across some old Japanese scans of a preview implicating Ankoku Densetsu as a straight sequel. The American title just made the relation more explicit.

Hrm, I did not know that. Stretching it a little, but Ms. Pac-Man was originally called "Crazy Otto" with a little guy with legs before General Computing Corporation (the people who made it) got sued, and thus Ms. Pac was born.

I'm actually really glad you mentioned this.

I'm actually really glad you mentioned this. But then again, art sells. If it wouldn't, there'd be fewer artists.

But then again, art sells. Did you buy Rez?

The point of art, however, is not sales. Art may sell, good art of any kind probably does (but not always), but that isn't the reason for art.
Good luck explaining this to any company exec, though...
EDIT: I don't really think ANY game so far qualifies as art, so far, even today...

But then again, art sells. Did you buy Rez? Yup. Both the dreamcast and the PS2 version. Agreed. Looking at the Amiga youtube thread reminded me that it has gotten even worse in recent years....

Yup. Both the dreamcast and the PS2 version. Touche. Speaking of games with artistic merit that don't sell terribly well, download some animated .gifs from Street Fighter III and King of Fighters, zoom in a few times, and look at them frame by frame. Serious love went into making some of those.

Now I feel like an ass for writing this article way back when.
