Hi, I have read the website for a really long while (maybe 10 years), and I finally decided to join yesterday. My favorite era is the 8/16-bit one (favorite systems: the Super Famicom and the PC Engine). Even though I used to hate 32-bit machines, I got a Playstation and a Saturn back then mostly to play RPGs. I love the Ganbare Goemon series, Actraiser, Magical Chase, the Fire Emblem series, Earthbound, the Ys Series, etc.

Hi, there!
I am one of those people who miss the good old days where coop was a fun experience with on or more of your buddies in the same room.
Since I started to play and read up on some (okay, seriously, about 50 Beat 'em ups in just two weeks) classics recently, Hardcore Gaming 101 proved to be an awesome ressource to gather information and find game titles of a specific genre. The article database is well organized and a nice read. Really enjoy browsing through it.
Just today, I found that there is a forum associated with the main site as well. Somehow totally overlooked that, although I even read some topics on here recently I found via google... ^^" I am looking forward to talking about Beat 'em ups in the long run, since I think this is a nice place to find people who actually play these. The thing is, I started on working on some more or less classic belt scroller/ Beat 'em up recently and it's quite hard to find a place that is still active to get useful feedback apart from other indie developers. Sadly, those tend to either give nothing but praise or giving feedback mainly from a developer's point of view. But, you know, playing a game is all about the player's experience. Of course I am not only here for getting direct feedback, but general design discussions, too. It's interesting to read upon older topics and trying to get to understand the viewpoints and preferences of different people.

Hello to the people who are newer than even me! I don't have much to say except...don't be surprised if I make a post either hitting on someone here, making a bad sex joke, or fangirling on some shitty games that I happen to enjoy...like Idea Factory's games, or the Breath of Fire series, or Final Fantasy VII.

Uh, I really hate Final Fantasy VII. It was so disappointing in terms of music, character design, atmosphere, and story compared to Final Fantasy VI. The latter is a work of art. I played it 10 hours straight on the day I got in 1994. FFVII made the series (and RPGs) mainstream in the West, and kind of stupid.

IMO a lot of recent attempts at old-school style BEUs have no been very good so if you want pointed criticism I might be able to help Also, earthphantomts- The Breath of Fire series is in no way shitty. I don't know about that Idea Factory crap though - I mean this literally, I know nothing about it- but Breath is solid.

From my experience, Breath of Fire generally has a better rep in Europe than the US. Unless you are a furry, then all the anthropomorphic races make it your favorite RPG series ever.

Well, I was mostly joking about all that anyway (also wanted to do a "Take That" to one of my favorite games and one of the most overrated games of all time). Don't take that too seriously .

I mean 6 is half a game.

I actually like how open ended Final Fantasy VI is. If you were hardcore, you could just go straight to beating the game with only 3 characters. Plus, the overall length of the game is well-paced. It doesn't feel dragged they way RPGs are nowadays.
I like playing Final Fantasy VII too, but it still feels like a rushed game. I started on the first Japanese release, and the last disc just felt like a rushed mess. There's no real side dungeons. All the extra materia had to be gotten by spending hours breeding chocobos 'n shit. There were a few glitches like Aerith phasing and fading out if you went back to the church in Midgar, as if there was some kind of hope you could revive her.
Then when I got to playing it in English, they added more boss fights, the battles with Emerald and Ruby Weapon, and extra CG scenes! Then Squaresoft Japan turned around and repackaged it back as "International Version." What the hell!

Did I...seriously get people debating the merits of Final Fantasy VII in the welcome thread?
I'm sorry, so so sorry...err, I mean, "Cool!"

I agree on Breath of Fire not being a shitty series. ;D It's one of my most beloved series of all time, leaving Final Fantasy in the dust. Played 1 to 5 and loved them all. Every single one of them had something that made them special and were solid overall. Definitely not the greatest titles in the genre, but they were simply making fun. And, yeah, I am from europe. But I hate furries. Ironically, I loved Scias and Rei very much. Final Fantasy's 6th installment was my favorite one by far. It did sport a vast and awesome cast of characters, an interesting story, had great gameplay and beautiful graphics. And- Kefka! FF VII doesn't need to be the greatest game of all time, but it had a great impact on games to come. I've got a lot of beat 'em up experience as well as defined opinions as to what makes them good or bad, so I'd be glad to see some more discussion about 'em. Keep us posted on how your games progress. IMO a lot of recent attempts at old-school style BEUs have no been very good so if you want pointed criticism I might be able to help I'd really love that. Figured coming here would would turn out to be an invaluable source of input, since this place seems to be a meeting place for really well-versed people. I am rethinking gameplay all the time when replaying classics all over again. Went from a juggle focused Sengoku 3 system back to more simple combo strings which simply knock enemies down. It's interesting to see how engaging simple gameplay is. Looking forward to any criticism. Getting the feeling down right can prove difficult. As you work on something on your own, you may turn a blind eye to many things fairly easily. And getting feedback to what works and what doesn't is always welcome. There is nothing worse than a developer suffering from tunnel vision. I will make sure to prepare something in the next few days. =)

Double slash, healing and water magic, quiet and badass, I love him! Only problem is how Mjllonir (sp?) was effectively dummied out because Fou-Lu is the one who gets Serpent (I also happen to like Nina, so this is a problem for me). Also, I don't get the hate for furries. But then, I don't get the hate for any fetish. Also also, wow, your reason for joining makes me embarrassed about mine ^^;!
