Not sure what compelled me to make this, other than the fact that there's a glorious new music forum to rant in. ;D
Anyway, my personal favorite soundtrack in the KoF series goes to '99. The style is rather different from the earlier games, blending in lots of kickass rock with an eclectic new style and pace. 2000 comes in second place, taking some elements from 99's soundtrack and opting for a slightly more mellow and techno-based BGM, but still rules in my mind.

Aaarrgh. I can't decide. They're all good, except for 2001.

96 and 2000 for me. 96 has some of the series' best themes (Esaka?, Fairy), all of the boss theme music, as well as the only version of Iori's theme I actually like, Stormy Saxophone 2.
2000 has Inner Shade, Beauty and Beast (best Ryuko team theme), Wild Party (best Korea song), Goodbye Esaka and Slasher Zero.
99 is damn good too, KD0079 is one of my favorite KoF songs, along with Way to Rebirth, which is probably the 2nd best Korea theme song.
2002 gets thumbs down for crappy sound quality, and 2001 just for being all around terrible. 2003 and XI are pretty good though, but doesn't seem to have the variety of older titles.
One day I want to do an article on the SNK New World Orchestra, there doesn't seem to be much out there for them.

'98 would be my favorite, simply because it has all the famous character themes. Psycho Soldiers, Esaka, Bloody, Terry and Blue Mary...such a joy to listen to.
'96 would be my second-favorite though, because of the Art of Fighting team music.

2000 is probably my favorite based on how many songs from that soundtrack I like: Ice Palace, KD-0084, The Trooper, Wild Party, Will, Beauty & The Beast, Come up Smiling.
'99 has KD-0079, Way to Rebirth, and Tears which are excellent, especially arranged Tears.
I don't know which game Arashi no Saxophone2 first appeared in, but it's great. My favorite KOF song is Splendid Evil from 2003. A few tracks from KOF XI soundtrack I think are pretty good: Queen, New Order, and KDD-0075.

After playing 99 and 2000 a lot, I... have decided that the music in both is a tie. They've both got their excellent tunes, and even the ones that aren't my favorites are enjoyable. I also think that Kyo's music in 2000, Good Bye Esaka, is as good as Tears from 99. So expressive! Krizalid has the greatest freaking boss music ever, Dear Fallen Angel. Don't tell me you can't fight to that shit! I also rather like Slasher Zero, which is... well, Zero's boss music. Creepy and ominous, and it wouldn't sound out of place in a Castlevania game either! Heh... anyway, I still do hold a bit of a place for the more classic tunes introduced in 96 and 98, as well as the old-school 94 and 95. One of the reasons why 97 isn't one of my more favored KoF games (though still really damn good) is the lack of most music. Though, if you ask me, the music in 2001 is worse than nothing. Aaaaaaaaand... one question. Come Up Smiling... isn't that the Women Team's theme for 2000? A damn good one. It bursts with the combined positivity of the lovely ladies fighting, and especially goes well with Yuri, IMO.

I like the 98-2000 arrange OSTs. I don't really want to pick a specific song as my favorite, though. I just wish I could get the 2002 OST.

My favorite is the 98 Soundtrack. It's like a KoF Greatest Hits Album and has all my favorite songs from 94-98.
99 and 2000 get serious props, too. As do the couple of standout tracks in 97.

Let's see here.
'96: Definitely up there. So many classic tunes. '97: Tempted to say it's my favorite, just because of the unorthodox approach they took with this one. '99 Evolution: Mixed bag. Some of the tunes are the best in the series (K's Team's, Ikari Team's, Korea Team's) but a few lackluster ones drag it down. 2000: KD-0084 is hands-down my favorite KoF tune. 2001: I like the NESTS Team's track. Otherwise, it's garbage. 2002: Midi bastardizations of classic jams. Awful. 2003: Not so bad, but can't really hold a candle to earlier ones. I actually think the original sounds better than the arranged version they included on the console releases. XI: Joker is my second-favorite KoF song behind KD-0084.

I've heard good things about XI, but I don't want to listen to it until I get to play XI which will prolly be NEVAR Same for me... dammit, I hate this fucking "vaporware" shit! I thought last year that SNK would have been working on porting XI to America in light of a certain announcement regarding Sony's decision to continue making games for the PS2, and that SNK supported this decision, or something like that... now I still have no idea if it will be ported over here or not! GRARGH!!! *head hits wall repeatedly* I'm a damn fool, but... if I don't hear anything about it in three months, I'll consider equipping my PS2 to play imports. I'm never crazy about the idea of modifying the system itself (especially since I'm so clumsy and unbelievably bad at do-it-yourself work), so maybe there's some other alternative to it...

King of Fighters XI will never see a PS2 release in America. This I guarantee you.
