Far as Music goes the Sonic Games have been a see saw the US Soinic CD music Blew while the Japanese Soundtrack (which did share some songs with the Japanese version) Was great.
Rush didn't quite fit Sonic but as a JSR fan I loved it.
Next Gen has the best music of the 3d games and of course the old Genesis games and their classic gaming anthems.
Do we have a favorite Sonic soundtrack?

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite Sonic soundtrack, with much of Sonic Adventure being pretty good as well (outside of pretty much all of the character themes - the only good one was E-102's).

Sonic CD (jap/euro) is my absolute favourite... it was the first taste of Redbook audio I'd ever had. Sonic 3 and Sonic R are next... and after that it would be Sonic Adventure, Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3D Blast (Sat).

I don't know why, probably due to me being absolutely insane, but my favorite music in a Sonic game (besides the JP Sonic CD) is actually Sonic Spinball more specifically the first level. It's the only sonic theme that really got stuck in my head. Another personal favorite would be the Open Your Heart theme of Sonic Adventure. Cheesyness to the max.

That ice theme from Sonic 3 stands out for being icy and still in that upbeat Sonic fashion.

I love the music in Sonic and Sonic 2. They both have very catchy soundtracks and play to the strengths of the sound hardware and sound better than pretty much 99% of the other Genesis games, and better than many SNES games.
Sonic 3, S&K... don't care for the music in these so much.
Sonic Adventure had a pretty good soundtrack. It wasn't as consistently good as Sonic and Sonic 2 though, but I felt it took the style of these two games, added some guitars, and there you had it.
I hated the Sonic Rush soundtrack. It didn't sound anything like a Sonic game. :/

The Rush Music sounded like outtakes from Ollie King and JSRF
I wish they got Nakamura to do the music in sonic rivals because the music in rivals is ass

Can anyone direct me to where I can listen to the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack? I really like the US version's soundtrack, unlike most people it seems, and I'd be interested in comparing the two.
Oh, my personal favorites would be Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Ice Cap Zone...friggin' breath-taking!

You can download Japanese Sonic CD at Shadowhaxor.net or GH.FFshrine.org Muchas gracias. I would exalt, but I've already done so a while ago. Anyway, having listened to most of the Japanese tracks, I can see why people would prefer it to the American version's. It's certainly more lively and upbeat than the oddly moody and low-key music found in the American release. Still, my feelings are mixed in some areas. For one, I do not see the fuss over "You Can Do Anything." I found it a pretty annoying track, to be honest. While "Sonic Boom" isn't a great track by any stretch, I like it much better. The rhythm felt more appropriately fitting, for one thing. And it just seemed a lot less cheesy than the other track. Other tracks whose American counterpart I prefer: Stardust Speedway - each of the different time zone's tracks were more distinct from one another than the Japanese version's and, like the intro, just better fits the level's overall atmosphere and design. Robotnik fights and game over screen - I really dig the semi-creepy vibe of the American version's, though admittedly the music in the Japanese version is more "Sonic-y." Now, the tracks whose Japanese counterpart does better: Tidal Tempest - wow, how completely lifeless this level's music was in the US version. Japan wins this one by a mile. Palmtree Panic - both version's music sound fairly similar, but there's simply more going on in the Japanese version. The "audience" sound effect is a nice touch. I'm pretty indifferent about all the other tracks. Though there are tracks that work and others that don't, I really don't think the Japanese soundtrack is any better or worse overall than the American soundtrack, just different. Again, I can see why people like the Japanese soundtrack better, as there is a vibrancy and energy absent from the US soundtrack, but the US soundtrack has a certain...aura not found in the other soundtrack. I'll just conclude this by saying that the Japanese soundtrack is overrated and the US soundtrack is underrated and, in the process, end up balancing each other out. I know it sounds like a cop-out by not taking any sides here, but really, this is how I feel about the matter.

There's something really strange about the quality of the character themes in later Sonic games.... I mean seriously.... I'm not admitting to being a huge fan of the theme songs, in fact I find most of them really bizzare, but the quality isn't something that can be argued. These are actual people, singing and playing real instruments. These songs had to be written, practiced and recorded.... songs about furry little critters in games.... songs that will be overlooked, and forgoten quicker than you can say "team chaotix". The cheezyness and campyness of those character theme songs (and the pathetic attempts at "rap" about Knuckles) get nothing but negative comments from anybody who's heard them... and most sonic fans would like to pretend they don't even exist. Yet Sega STILL makes their games with them in it. Each character, each team, each final boss needs to have some lyrical theme song... when it would be much easier... and perhaps better... if they would just stick with videogame music. Maybe the songs are only terrible in context too.... I mean honestly.... if you listen to Shadow's theme from Sonic Heroes.... and imagine if it was recorded by a pretty well known band, and maybe if it wasn't ABOUT Shadow the Hedgehog, you'd probably hear it on the radio for weeks straight, or on hundreds of myspace pages. Even if it were the same song... just with different lyrics and with a different content. It may have become very popular. (Even if it's not your thing, and it's not mine, I'm saying.... I can imagine that happening considering the tastes of today's youth culture) I'm a big fan of most of the music from the entire sonic series... but it's the theme songs that I give an occasional listen to... trying to appreciate the passion of the development team going through all the trouble for them.

Also the fact that Amy's theme contains the line "It was so cute I just had to shave it"..

Yeah... seriously.... what was that about? And the worst part is that song was the only one carried over to SA2 without being changed at all. And it was probably the worst one (because of the horribly suggestive lyrics). The other characters had their lyrics carry over, but with new songs.... I haven't played the latest Sonic games, including Sonic Riders, Shadow, the 360 sonic.... have they continued this trend or have they realized it'll be easier for them to keep them out?
