What's your favorite soundtrack from this era? I'd have to go with James Bond Jr. for the NES - Probably a terrible game, but the soundtrack is phenomenal.

Seconded with Zillion.
I would also like to add:
Gyruss (NES) Jackal (NES) Gradius and Salamander (NES) The Japanese version of Rygar (argos no senshi) for the NES Hokuto no Ken (SMS) Aleste (SMS), especially with the FM synth, oh, and every other game for the SMS that had FM synth.
And I'm such a burnout I have to think of more.

I can only pick one favorite 8-bit soundtrack among them all? I'm not sure... Knightmare II: The Maze of Galious (MSX1) maybe?

Shatterhand, NES Mega Mans, Japanese version of Castlevania III, Batman: Return of Joker, Mother, Final Fantasy III, DQ IV, Madara, and of course Lagrange Point (which, despite what you hear it IS an NES game. Konami's special chip allowed FM Synth so it sounds a lot like a genny game).

My favorites are Mega Man 2 and Castlevania 2 (though it's my least favorite in the series gameplay-wise). I have few other 8-bit soundtracks that I constantly listen to. Oh yeah, don't forget Zelda, Metroid, and the SMB games. I know they're overdone but you can't argue that they are classics. Also, have you ever heard the Mach Rider theme? It's pretty awesome though the game is unexciting.

Blaster Master easily.
Also, I remember the NES Starwars game having an absolutely infectious remix of the cantina song.

Akumajou Densetsu is probably the number one, if you ask me.
Other favorites: Air Fortress (wasn't that HAL's first game?), Ufouria/Hebereke, and then that old classic, Kirby's Adventure.

Yeah, Kirby can really Drop it Like it's Hot, if you know what I mean.
