I dunno. I mean his cat books are straight comedy and they're pretty damned funny, so he's definitely got a sense of humor. I'm not saying that Ito isn't able to do comedy, I read some pages of his Cat Diary and it's quite funny, and he does several morbidly funny or just funny stories as well. I'm just trying to say that his brand of horror becomes too weird at times and I don't understand if he's making black comedy or if he's just trying too hard to be surreal.
One example: I recently read Dissolving Classroom about a guy who has the Satanic power of melting people's brains, and eventually their entire bodies, through continued apologies. Sure, this could be a kind of satire on the Japanese habit of being too polite and formal in every occasion... but when you consider that the resulting goop of melted people is still somewhat alive, conscious and being able to talk and perform plans, you just can't take it seriously anymore and you wonder if it wasn't just a weird way of giving the two evil protagonists some sort of comeuppance (which is also strange since Ito's villains usually get away with it). It's telling that the thing I found to be the most scary was seeing a kid with his throat slashed, a thing that is completely mundane in the context of this story and Ito's general work, but still was disturbing contrasted with the general weirdness.

I agree that Ito's stories are really only scary if it is one short, distilled chapter. His outlandisch ideas get incredibly goofy and laughable the longer a work of his stretches.

That's what I meant, though. I think he's going more for black comedy than for pure horror, though I am sure some stuff just gets lost in translation.

I have a volume of Uzumaki and I get a faint sense of black comedy from it as well I’m actually reading that right now. I love how all of these crazy things happen and the chapter abruptly ends. Then life goes on in the next chapter like nothing happened. Kylie should be traumatized and running around cutting herself but she just continues to have that blank expression. That’s comedic in itself.  Oh and here’s me. |

Went to the theater again after what feels like an era. I get that the photo looks creepy, but it was also partially the intention... and it's out of focus because I took it on the fly without worrying too much about the result. By the way that movie I went to see was more or less "superpowered Roman circus freaks vs. the Nazis". Yup that's a thing, and not even a B-movie!

excelsior Thanks  I hope that I didn't ruin the days of whoever were expecting me to look anything like her! As for why I'm using her as an avatar... it's a long story, but I think I will continue to use her pics as avatars for quite a while. But only in this forum, I'm not catfishing anyone!

Sounds like a lot a fun! At least, I'm hoping it was a more satisfying movie than the last movie I saw in theater: No Time to Die |

Only problem is, the director only made another feature film before, and it was fairly minimalistic, so now that he had a much bigger budget it feels the film goes overboard and becomes quite bloated in the end. But it's still worth it mostly because Italy hadn't produced anything like it in quite a long time. |
