hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/alienhominid/alienhominid.htmTotal Metal Slug clone, but well done. I think the levels lack some of the creativity of the Metal Slug games, and it ends up feeling a bit TOO long. And the explosions make it hard to see stuff. But the amusing graphics make up for most of it.

I may have played the flash version of this the very day it was first released. Your description - blatant Metal Slug knock-off, lacks creativity, levels are too damn long - is dead on.
It might be worth mentioning that the original one level flash game was intended to be sequeled in flash. The second level of the console versions is based on the intended flash sequel.
No it's not. Tom Fulp had previously made a Metal Slug fan game in flash where you drive the tank over all kinds of crap. He's also pretty explicitly stated that the game is a Metal Slug clone. There might be a little Gunstar Heroes in there as well - another game he's mentioned being really into.
What? Resting dolls? That should probably be nesting dolls (not their actual name, but who cares?).

Are you referring to the three levels in the game, or the stages that take place in those three levels? I thought they did a pretty good job of keeping the game play fresh. In each stage, they tried to do something different, and for the most part, pulled it off quite well. The only thing I believed they didn't polish enough was the silly spacecraft stages in between the three levels (which is missing from the article, sorry). I think of it as more of an inspired game. I agree that it's a mix-up of Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug, though. Yeah, it's supposed to be nesting dolls (matryoshka).

I didn't write the article, but yeah, it's missing a bit about the UFO segments. I should add that in.
I think they tried to do some different stuff in some levels...I just think they went on too long. Most of the stages are flat and a bit dull - compare this to Gunstar Super Heroes, which is constantly switching up mechanics every few minutes. I think the background details (especially in the first set of stages) help make up for it. The core controls are decent enough though.
Thanks for the heads-up on the nesting dolls part...I knew that sounded off but I wasn't sure of their correct name.

I feel Alien Hominid, Metal Slug, and Gunstar all suffer from repetition. I feel empowered for the first hour of game play, then I'm just kind of winging it until the end. I think the only action game that stays fresh for me is God Hand, and to some extent, Ninja Gaiden.

Yeah but they only take about an hour to beat, if not less (well, more for Alien Hominid) so it works out OK.
These games aren't as tighly designed as, say, Contra, so I can see that too.

I just don't see Metal Slug or Gunstar Heroes as being repetitive. Alien Hominid, yeah, but not those. As I see it, they're easily comparable to Conta.
Anyway, it's still cool to see this game go up here. Definitely prime HG101 material.

Alien Hominid is actually shorter than MS and GS in my opinion. AH doesn't seem to last much longer than 45 minutes, while the GBA version took me 30 from start to finish (with a ridiculous amount of continues/lives left). I get an hour out of MS and GSH. The one single level flaw I found is that AH randomly stops the screen from moving and throws a rush of guys at you. Another example is when there is a tiny blockade in front of you, and you have to destroy it before you proceed. Kind of seems like they were trying to stretch more time into the game. It ruins the pacing. And ranting a little more, I don't get the point of the roll triggers. I think they should have added some invincibility frames to it or something, because outside of moving a little faster, it's practically worthless.

I'm not proof-reading today, so... AH is a fun game, and the highway level (I believe it's 1-2) cracks me up every time I see or play it. I wish the game had more moments like that, although the UFO bits are somewhat fun. My main gripe is that the bullets the enemies fire are sometimes impossible to see, and I'm somewhat surprised the article doesn't mention this glaring problem. Also, you can play Super Soviet Missile Mastar here for free. It starts slow, but it gets a bit more hectic like three or four levels in.

I always wanted to play this game, but it was only released on PS2 here in Australia, while I wanted the GameCube version.
Figured the loading times would be annoying and I had other games I wanted more, so I never bothered.
I've read good things about Alien Hominid, though.

Get it on the 360 Honestly I'd rank it below Metal Slug not because it's more repetitive (which it isn't by the way) but more because the mechanics and the level design don't make it as fun to play. It's more monotonous and ends up being tedious when it tries to be clever. Still I'd rather play it then Metal Slug 4.

I like Alien Hominid, but compared to the Metal Slug Anthology, it isn't worth buying.

I sent you the mobile phone version called Alien Hominid Redialed. I don't know if it's a sequel or a port, you be the judge.
