MAME being slow isn't an issue for me since I've got a fast enough computer, though it does tend to load games pretty slowly.

Try the Xbox 360 controller. You can plug that into your PC, find the driver and it should work fine (including the joysticks) on most of your emulators.

Yeah I was gonna say that i've heard that the d-pad is horrible. I've never actually used one, so I wouldn't know.

Yeah I was gonna say that i've heard that the d-pad is horrible. I've never actually used one, so I wouldn't know. It is horrible, however, you'll be happy to know that analogue support is available in Snes9X. I used my 360 controller's analogue sticks to play Chrono Trigger on this emulator.

If you ask me, some Sega Saturn pads have pretty kick-ass D-pads on them, but bar none the best one I've had any experience with is the Sega Genesis Super Pad 6 (not the 6-button pad - this one's got a Turbo and Slow switch on it, a blue Mode button on the face, and is slightly smaller). It's got nice response, the buttons have great punch to them, and the D-pad on it is very easy to maneuver with diagonals. Thing is, though, I don't know where to get a Genesis USB adapter...
