I guess this is the theme for this season - in depth historical lessons on Sega Master System games. This time we have Golvellius, one of my favorite SMS games: hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/golvellius/golvellius.htmJUST YESTERDAY I learned of the existence of the pseudo-sequel/parody Super Cooks and immediately played it through. There's a funny story behind this - was I googling around Japanese pages doing some research when I stumbled across a review for Super Cooks. However, it was in Japanese and I wasn't yet familiar with the English title. When rendered in katakana, it thought it said "Super Cocks". So this one reviews basically said "I like Super Cocks" and I thought it was an awfully strange tagline for a retro video game site. Then I later found the game and set things straight. Apparently there are really pornos called "Super Cocks" though.

Thou art a pinhead for making this mistake! Good stuff. Shame Compile folded without ever giving us the real sequel the ending so begged for.

Wait, did you remove Golvellius from the Compile article then? Great.

It totally never belonged. I always thought it was odd that it was even there.

Yeah, it was totally out of place. I just stuck it in there because I wanted to write about Golvellius. It'll be removed by the time this all goes live.

This is one of those games that has me wanting a Master System. Hopefully, I'll find one at a yard sale or something.

I didn't knew much about the games, until now. Thanks, Kurt! I really should play and finish either the SMS or MSX2 version of the game. I've only played Golvellius demo for MSX2 many years ago as a kid.

I've played a lot of the MSX Golvelliuses and this article brought me good memories. =) I hope I'm not writing too late, but I have a suggestion. The article doesn't mention it, but the MSX2 version of Golvellius runs on MSX2+ with VERY improved graphics in the intro and the ending, and the scrolling when changing screens is also improved. In the graphics comparison section, both the left and the right column are identified as "MSX", when it's clear the right column is supposed to represent the MSX2/2+ version. Curiously, the title screen is from MSX2+, but the intro and ending are from MSX2. It would be very cool if the article had screenshots from Golvellius running on a MSX2+, since the MSX2 intro and ending graphics are actually watered-down versions of them, made to fit within the limited MSX2's 256-color screen mode. If I recall correctly, the MSX2+ graphics are displayed in a mode capable of nearly 12500 colors. =) You can see it in this YouTube video: youtube.com/watch?v=8CdXh_VqK7M

Hey, nice post, Parn! And welcome to the forums. By the way, I'm familiar with some of your game music arrangements. Really good stuff, I must say. I found your website by accident a few years ago.

Wait a second, the already enhanced Golvellius MSX2 version looks even better in MSX2+ mode?

Just the digitalized opening and ending screens as far as I know, and this is possible because the game was made for MSX2/MSX2+ and not just for MSX2 computers.
There's some other MSX2/MSX2+ games that worked better on MSX2+ computers; For instance Konami's Space Manbow has smoother scrolling when played on MSX2+.

I see. I guess I'll have to add the MSX2+ ending too then.

Yeah those ending shots were grabbed from Rey's site. I'll see if I can redo the intro ones at some point though.

Thanks, MP83. I'm glad you like my work, and as soon as I solve some technical issues I'll update my website with some new music. =) Golvellius on MSX2+ had a different way of changing screens in the map, using hardware scroll. But in my personal opinion the MSX2 effect is a bit cooler. I played this game a lot in my old MSX and MSX2 (both versions), but the unreliable hardware prevented me from ever finishing it. I always played it for its music, though. ;]
Rey, I'm a big fan of The Video Game Museum. I go there often, especially to see the endings section. It would be awesome to have more MSX2+ stuff there (not that there are that many MSX2+ games...). ^^
