I'm not very DOS-savy I have to say. Anyways, I would really like to give Syndicate Wars a whirl, I haven't seen the damn thing since a week or so after it's release and I thought it was pretty nice. The Ps1 version however was horrific, the new intro sucked, the controls were changed- and sucked...basically the limitations of the hardware pee'd over most of the good things. Anyways, I use VISTA (god have mercy on me for that) and I was wondering just how easy is it to use something like DOS box? Anyone got a mini guide? Anyone ever got Syndicate Wars running on it? Be gentle.

DOSBOX IS GOD.
Pretty much all you need to do is read any help files it comes with (I forget).
Basically all you need to do is mount a folder to a virtual DOS BOX drive (sorta like Daemon Tools), then switch to said false drive and go to town. I think.

Good luck with Syndicate Wars, though. I got mine working with more-or-less default settings, but performance wasn't too great. You'll want to turn the in-game details down a bit, and don't run it in high-res mode unless your system has a godly CPU.

Seems my PC had a godly CPU, got the game working fine in the higher res mode with the fmv's and such- great

DOSbox is nifty, but it doesn't recognize virtual drives. To get Little Big Adventure to run I had to burn the image onto an actual CD and play off of that.

Actually, it does recognise virtual drives. I'd booted System Shock up with DAEMON tools and then used the MOUNT command to make it a virtual drive that DOSBox could read.

Try mounting the disc image in DAEMON Tools/Alcohol and then mounting it in DOSBox like this:
z:\> MOUNT D E:\ -t cdrom Mounts the virtual drive and explicitly tells DOSBox that it's a CD drive, enabling MSCDEX emulation and effectively fooling the game that's trying to check if the disc is inserted.

Be gentle. Two suggestions: 1. Go to DOSBox's website and look at the games database. You will find compatibility notes for most games. If there is something special that's needed to run your game you will see it there. 2. If you are still having trouble then head over DOSBox's own forums. Chances are your game has been discussed there already.
