www.hardcoregaming101.net/rastan/rastan.htmTaito's Conan the Barbarian-themed arcade game was one of my favorites on the SMS when I was a kid. I opened up the case a few days ago and still found my high scores written down from twenty years ago. The sequels weren't quite so hot though (though I barely played Warrior Blade.)

Maybe worth noting that the MSX version of Rastan doesn't have a last boss! You just kill all the previous bosses again and THE END.

Couple of notes: * If you're taking payment, that's by definition not altruistic, right? * As day turns to night, the intensity/frequency of enemies increases. It's a more integrated timer. * "...put into a game primarily knowN" * IMB Personal Computers? * There are some nigh-impossible jumps in Rastan Saga 2. * "...known aS Rastan" * "...takes a que" => "takes a cue" * Wow, never saw the Rastan beat-'em-up before. I wish they had put it on one of the Taito Legends. * What do the icons under the score indicate? Are those earned power-ups? * "...a blone female warrior" => blonde or lone? * Good! * This is still one of the few SMS games I can 1CC, and I also like the SMS version better than the arcade.

Oh yeah, maybe worth mentioning the vine-swinging? And perhaps the homage to Jungle Hunt? And how FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE it is to grab them in the second game?

Fixed up some of that, thanks! * If you're taking payment, that's by definition not altruistic, right? I'd need to verify with Rasa because I know little of Conan anything, but I think that was the joke. I remember reading the Sega magazine about Rastan and wanting to get it for the SMS. Then I wandered into my local arcade and was completely astonished that Rastan was originally an arcade game. Then I immediately went home and called up 1-800-USA-SEGA to let them know this fact and to make sure it was mentioned on the box cover when it came out. I'm sure they hated me because I called all the time, but I got a free subscription to their mag and a whole printout full of secrets. I'm almost entirely sure that gesture is a large reason why I still love Sega to this day.

I love Warrior Blade and I'm completely saddened that it hasn't reached stateside at all. Because it's a damn fine game.

I'm almost entirely sure that gesture is a large reason why I still love Sega to this day. I remember vexing one Sega professional who was insistent that there was a bonus round after the second level in Shinobi (before you beat Ken-Oh; there isn't), despite getting a Bonus Round child. My brain is fuzzy on this, though. I got a bunch of print-out sheets of hints from them, I think I still have the Golvellius one floating around with little doodles of bees and shit on it. And "Sega Visions", like "The Atarian" was a better house-organ than Nintendo Power, in my mind.

I wish they had put it on one of the Taito Legends. * What do the icons under the score indicate? Are those earned power-ups? Yeah I was joking about the "altruistic" part. Partly because (like the two Conan movies actually) in the original Rastan and Warrior Blade he's all about the money. Whereas in the rush jobs and the home ports he's all about defending a kingdom for evil and/or rescuing a princess. This was inflicted on Howard's creation also. In the first Conan story, he's a chronic depressive, a cynic king. After Howard's death most authors chose to make him something more easily accessible for mass consumption, which is a shame since the less than perfect characters are part of what makes Howard's stories so awesome. Rastan Saga 2 has no impossible jumps, they just stupidly programmed the game so that Rastan's sprite is wider than the background tile graphics. You can walk more than have a character's length off any block, which is pretty stupid but very doable (kind of reminds me of Time Lord ). The beat'em up is so much fun. It's frustrating that at this point it will likely never be released outside of Japan. The items under the score are the earned items mentioned briefly towards the beginning. The sequels replace these with various items that are immediately used upon being picked up (though the third game brings back the multiple weapons). The best solution would be to put up a screen from the US attract mode, there's one that lists the power ups and what they do. Hope this is liked, people should talk about/play Rastan all damn day. I was blown away by how well the SMS version was re-designed, and while the original will always be my favorite in the franchise, I probably play the SMS one more overall.

Damn, but I do love this series. I concur that Warrior Blade is incredibly underrated, and it's just got so much awesomeness going for it. However, am I alone in thinking that the end boss of the castle is one of the most disturbing battles in game history? It's like fighting the corpse at the end of Ikari Warriors, only this one keeps chanting "help me" repeatedly as dragons keep bursting out of his skeleton. Also, question time: Does anyone know what the crap the voices are saying in Nastar? It sounds like "Endu, Cronell" when you insert a credit... and that just doesn't make an iota of sense.

This article makes it sound like Rastan Saga/Rastan was ported to MSX (as in MSX1), when in reality it was ported to MSX2. Hopefully this will be fixed since the game isn't MSX1 compatible. I know this isn't really an issue, thanks to MSX emulators supporting all MSX systems, but still. Otherwise, a good article.

I also harrassed Sega all the time as a lad. I mainly would lie and say someone stole game manuals so they could send replacements. They would send photocopies. I also received a free sunscription to Sega Visions. I feel bad about harrassing the US arms of game companies for free shit in my youth.

Yeah, it bothers me that rommers don't make distinctions between MSX1, MSX2 and MSX2+ games. Which makes it difficult for us to find out for what version is the game for.
It's almost like saying the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance are the same system.

Heh as Kurt will tell you, I was painstakingly wrestling with how specific to get about the ports up until two days ago even. I had gone through several drafts of it weeks (haha more like months) ago and was trying to find a balance between giving a decent amount of information about the platforms, but mostly focusing on why the games are good (or in Rastan Saga II's case, excrement). I began with wanting the article to be the be-all end-all, but instead I figured it would be more in the spirit of the site to have it be more useful to people not familiar with the game series at all (who will hopefully at some point obtain Taito Legends or the Master System game).
