hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/majyuuou/majyuuou.htmSuper Famicom fans may recognize this cool demonic action game, which has some of the coolest, darkest atmosphere on a 16-bit system. The game itself is fun, if a bit on the easy side, but it's a cool ride while it lasts.

Yeah I remember this. Pretty fun game. I think there was an obscenity plastered in blood on the train level.

Never played it until tonight. "Castlevania with a gun" is very accurate for a first impression (specially with that sewer section and not being able to move while firing). The character's sprite size is sort of distracting. Makes me wish the game would zoom in on the action a little. The backgrounds make up for it though.

Interesting. I'll have to try this one sometime.
You might want to add the AGTP translation to the links.

So I got through the game and beat it for the first time. In the end the guy kills his daughter! I guess that's the crappy ending right?

I appreciate you guys linking to my review at the end there. Thanks.
I heard a lot about this game prior to my write-up nearly two years ago. I think a couple years ago it was fairly obscure to a certain degree, but not so much any more in today's market. The word is out. And I heard a lot of praise for Majyuuou, so part of me was expecting a very good game coming in. Overall, I liked and enjoyed it, but it fell short of my expectations. It's got a somber vibe and some cool creepy visuals, but the gameplay isn't anything you can't find comparably in a dirt-common, dirt-cheap US SNES action game. Still, if you're a diehard SNES/SFC fan, I think this is without question worth tracking down, simply based on the fact that it plays well enough and that there weren't many games of this dark nature on the SNES.
I wish the game were better but hey, in the end, I'm happy to call it part of my collection. Love the forbidding atmosphere, particularly in the sewers, where it just oozes.

Yeah, I agree with steven. This is the game that all seasoned sidescroller fans point you to on the SFC (and that was the case even back around 2000). I was so pumped to play it based off the screenshots and while it certainly provided the apocalyptic, foreboding atmosphere that I expected, the mechanics are certainly mediocre and I couldn't find any reason to play it a 3rd time. For most people, it probably conveys a lot of the same feelings as Psycho Dream.

Problem I see is you got 3 different forms (4 if you count when being plain human) but they all feel/control the same way. They all have a double jump, a dash move, duck and can't move while firing. The look different but they don't feel different.

So I got through the game and beat it for the first time. In the end the guy kills his daughter! I guess that's the crappy ending right? In theory. Personally I think thats the "best" ending, as only that one fits with the rest of the game, atmosphere et al. (To get the other one, get the gems in, say, red/green/blue/grey order.) What I really find interesting though is how noone seems to have remarked on the amount of undetailed female nudity in the game. The harpy and flower queen main bosses are obvious, but whos noticed bayer's second form's icicle? Or the title menu? (Took me ages to notice that for some reason)
