I don't see it on your list and maybe it's not retro enough for you but have you tried King's Field IV? There is Metroidlike ability gating in that and I found I got a similar vibe from it's exploration focused gameplay. The site is a really nice resource btw as someone who really enjoys Metroidlikes.

No I was unaware of that one. I had checked KF1-3 and sorted them as outliers based on their lack of jumping. Looks like this one doesn't have it either but it's still interesting, I'll check it out. Thanks! I haven't yet decided where the cutoff point will be, possibly at Arkham Asylum, Guacamelee or Ori 1.

Let's see: You've got Ninja Gaiden, Batman Returns, Aladdin, Jurassic Park, Master of Darkness, Power Strike 1&2... yeah, you pretty much got most of the ones I would've picked - good job!
Here are some other titles I would've added: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Baku Baku Animal and the Sonic sequels. The latter may or may not count as "hidden" due to their somewhat lukewarm to negative reception: Sonic 2 is pretty enjoyable if approached on its own terms, Chaos is not too shabby either and even Sonic 3D Blast is actually relatively decent, at least for the most part.

Well, maybe Sonic Chaos but even then that's fairly well known. Blast is pretty bad though.
Shinobi World wasn't exactly hidden and Baku Baku is better on arc/sat.

Well, I personally find it hard to tell what is considered "hidden" or a "gem". In this case I just took a look at the "Games that Defined" guide on the site and added what wasn't on there. And yeah, the Sonic sequels are certainly not hidden, just games with a mixed reputation. But when it comes to Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, I'm not so sure if it is that well known. Quality-wise these lists tend to be all over the place, Master of Combat for example is not excactly what a fighting game fan would call a good game, probably not even a mediocre one. But it's certainly an interesting title, considering there aren't that many "functional" fighting games on the system. Don't get me wrong, though: I appreciate this approach, as sometimes "lesser" games can be quite fascinating to check out or even fun despite and sometimes because of their flaws.
Which is why I will defend Sonic Blast's uneven quality to my death (even though the GG version is slightly better)! And I've played basically the whole Watara Supervision library lately, so I do know what actual bad games look like (roughly 2/3 of those are utterly broken) .
Btw: What's your take on Tom and Jerry (MS)?
