Anime and japanese videogames feature a bunch of "KUSO!", which literally means shit. That's probably what those Langrisser characters were saying most of the time. People curse, and I'm betting they would in a fantasy setting too. Who wouldn't yell out profanity if they came across a fucking dragon? Besides Langrisser is all about war, and soldiers are known to curse like sailors, so much so that they even invented some terms (ie FUBAR) Of course, the Tales of Phantasia example was just something whoever edited the fan translation's script made up entirely, so I'm not so much in favor of it, but their translation was fine otherwise, as I recall.

Right, but the issue wasn't cursing itself. "Fuck" obviously has some history, but my understanding is there is also a modern, flexible usage, and the game made me wonder whether that was used and the best way of expressing certain sentiments. There was nothing like the ToP example, i.e. nothing seemed made up.

Sonic the Hedgehog also says "kuso!" in Japanese and it's translated as things like "Crud!" and "Darn it!". Japanese doesn't QUITE have curse words like other languages but does have very rude types of speech. Whether they would be localized as curse words depends on context. Like if it's a yazuka yelling at someone then f-bombs and whatever are probably appropriate. For Langrisser, I think curse words like that would generally be out of place, or used sparingly.

True. I'm really wondering exactly how it's used in this translation. I tried to play the PC version years ago but it ran at the wrong speed IIRC.
