3 meaning that I'm going to have to play the game twice, once for each translation, and then a third time for Japanese screenshots.

Maybe I'm wrong but if you are playing a rom can't you use the same save file with the patched and unpatched game? If I'm right then you could just save where you want the screen shot to be and then load up the Japanese version. Though I could be smoking the crack.

Brand is right, the save file (not the save state, but the battery backup) should be interchangeable between all versions.
Why are there two different translations anyway?

You are going to include translation differences in the article or something?

As of now, I have NO clue why two different groups translated the game. Maybe one wasn't aware of the other.
Also, I plan to include translation differences, if any, within the article. We'll see how it goes.

But translation differences are not really part of the game since it didn't have an official translation, it's a translation hack. it's like making an article about Super Mario Bros and comparing it with the numerous hacks people have done.
That's what I think at least.

That's not quite the same. The SMB hacks usually alter sprites or completely remake the game. For all I know, the story may be translated in a completely different manner. In any event, this wouldn't be a major part of the article, just a factoid more or less.

Okay... you say we should try to cover an entire series. I want to know what counts as "series."
Supposed, for example, I wanted to do an article on Interplay's two Lord of the Rings games for the PC. Would I also have to cover Interplay's Super Nintendo LOTR game (even though it's not connected to the PC series) or every other Tolkien/LOTR-based game ever made?

This is more constructive criticismthan anything else but...
Is it possible that contributors spend a little less time talking about how hot various video game characters are? If you think she's hot, chances are the rest of us agree, and it kind of drags down an otherwise great article by having something as jarring as EXTREMELY FREAKING SEXY in all caps to start out a character description.
Or not, really. Just my opinion, is all.

Actually I would suggest less fanboying on characters in general. I mean, I don't need an in-depth bio (or even a description) of every face that appears in the game. I just want to hear about the game. Course, there are some exceptions, but still...

You could, but in that case the article could be called "The Lord of The Rings PC series" or something that makes it clear it's ONLY about the PC series.
Hell, Kurt made an article about Snatcher and didn't cover Policenauts.

I just want to hear about the game. Course, there are some exceptions, but still... When it comes to RPGs and fighting games though, characters are REALLY important, since ultimately they're the focus of many games. Not everyone needs to be covered, sometimes it gets out of hand. I'm doing Front Mission now and each game has a roster of at least ten to twenty characters, but I'm only covering the main four, lest it become too overwhelming. It's mostly so if you hear about a character somewhere else, you can think "Hmm, they're from X game", and can kinda recall what they look like and stuff. Anyway, as long as you specify you're just covering a certain class of Lords of the Rings titles, that should be fine. (Like, I'd prefer an all inclusive article on Irem arcade games, but that's going to be huge, so Shell narrowing it down to the 'post-apocalytpic ones' was cool) Snatcher and Policenauts aren't *technically* related, which is why I didn't cover it. It's more the spiritual successor. I'll have its own article, one day.

I'm with Kurt on this. Often, the character profiles are my favorite parts of the articles, especially if the article is on an rpg series that looks fun, but I have no plans of actually trying it.
