Whenever Kurt gets around to putting it up, I've finished and sent in the Ehrgeiz article. Just in time, too - got a load of new games to play through now, including The Bouncer.

Really didn't like the fighting portion, but I thought the dungeon mode was really cool. Can't wait to see your article.

Man, I thought that game was the shit in the latter 90's. When I look back on it, I realize the fighting system itself isn't as refined as Virtua Fighter, but still damn fun. And of course, the Dungeon Mode owns all. Never could figure out how the hell to play that damn minigame with the panels.
I look forward to reading it, WW! ;D

Outside of the dungeon mode, I really liked the Battle Panel mode. If you've ever played Othello/Reversi, that's pretty much what it is (just in realtime and you can tackle the other guy).

OK! hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/ehrgeiz/ehrgeiz.htmMy only question is - is Dream Factory really a part of Square? I know their games are published by them, but I was under the impression that they were actually a separate entity. They made The Bouncer, right? Did they do anything afterward?

Apparently they've been doing a lot of licensed titles since The Bouncer (from what I can make out of their Japanese corporate page). They did a few UFC games for Crave, as well as something called Pride GP and a couple anime games. I can't really figure out anything else, as my Japanese character set doesn't want to work for me today. [edit] And you spelled my name wrong again.

as well as something called Pride GP Pride Grand Prix / Fighting Championship predates UFC though it isn't popular in the US really. THQ's Pride FC game was published in Japan by Capcom and it sold pretty well there, so Pride licensed their fighters/etc. to whoever Dream Factory's (may as well get the real deal instead of THQ's people) publisher was at the time and they got to work on future Pride GP games. The FIFA affect I guess, as while not too many follow it here Pride is the biggest mixed martial arts fighting organization in the world and I believe the most popular overall. Even the Fire Pro wrestling games often have a Pride devoted league in their default rosters. Good stuff. www.prideofficial.com/

Awesome work, WW! I should fire up Ehrgeiz again and return to that friggin' panel game. A bit of a dumb question, but is Othello basically like the (real creepy) arcade game Ataxx?

Actually, Othello is as far from Ataxx as you can get. It might help to look up a Wikipedia article (and maybe a browser version of the original game) to practice up, because it seems Battle Panel doesn't like it when you just guess all the time.

I remember buying Ehrgeiz for the fanboy reason...because of the final fantasy characters Not a bad game, though it didn't play quite like I expected, and I remember trading it in. The main reason I didn't keep it was because you couldn't play as Cloud in the dungeon mode, which REALLY disapointed me. Well that and that most of the FF characters were just meshes/skins for the existing characters, sans Cloud and Sephiroth (And the FF ending was the same for all of them and was LAME)

Hey do you guys remember Tobal? That was a great fighting game, with character design by Akira Toriyama. It was definitely better than Ehrgeiz , Toshinden and all the first 3D fighters for PS. It also had a dungeon mode.
Also, remember Einhander ? that shoot'em up by Squaresoft for the PS. Friggin hard.

Tobal 2 is awesome and it's too bad it didn't come out in the US. It is my favorite 3d fighter, and the graphics are stunning considering when it was released.

The graphics in Tobal 2 (and 1 as well) use a strange little concept that maybe should have been used a little more in other games. Not texturing to increase speed - clever.
