Huh. I remember talking to Deuce years ago about the Ys VI translation and I had assumed the PC one was his. Guess not.

Huh. I remember talking to Deuce years ago about the Ys VI translation and I had assumed the PC one was his. Guess not. That particular patch was scrapped, I believe, after... was it a Korean fan-translator who had legal action taken against him? By Konami? Something like that. Not wanting to risk the same fate, Nightwolve and Deuce dropped the project. It wasn't until later that Figli di Gaucci restarted it, mostly as an excuse to create an Italian fan-translation patch afterward. (: -Tom

As for the best form playing each game in English, with the exception of Ys V and Ys Origin, here's my recommendation: - Ys I-II ---> Ys I-II Complete (Windows) with unofficial English patch I'd like to just add that, to this day, this has not changed. Falcom have re-released Book I and II YET AGAIN as "Chronicles", only with a different graphics engine (it's still 2D but looks more like a stodgy mid-90s Playstation game), and disappointingly soulless renditions of the original music by Yukihiro Jindo. I'm even tempted to say they were phoned in. Falcom's 3D remake of Ys III "Oath In Felghana" features an astonishing soundtrack by Ryo Yunemitsu. And this isn't surprising since he provided the original OST back in 1991 as well. He clearly gets the game and the vibe of the music. (The game itself was bloody excellent as well, and a lot more fun than Ark of Napishtim.) I'm disappointed by Chronicles. Falcom rarely put things out that are half-arsed, but this was.

I can't recall the name, but Yonemitsu didn't originally compose the Ys III soundtrack, he just arranged it for the PC Engine. Maybe Mieko Ishikawa?
The dude that did the arrangements for Felghana and Chronicles is the same person.

Yeah, Yonemitsu had absolutely nothing to do with the music for Oath in Felghana, and the only Ys III soundtrack he touched was the PC-Engine's. I'd also like to add that while Chronicles isn't a HUGE step up from Complete, most people seem to feel that the Chronicles soundtrack IS the best version yet (and even if you think otherwise, the Complete and PC-88 soundtracks are both selectable as alternatives), AND it has new character art (which can also be swapped back to Complete if you prefer). So it's not really any WORSE than Complete in any way -- it just adds more options! Plus, it has a newly-edited translation that's undoubtedly the best yet. Once it's released in February, anyway. -Tom

I'm disappointed by Chronicles. Falcom rarely put things out that are half-arsed, but this was. I'm disappointed by the PC version of Chronicles, which surely was released half-arsed, but I found the PSP version much to my liking. Even if it might not be the best version of Ys I & II, it's at least the best handheld version of it. Definitely gonna buy Chronicles in English when it comes out in February 2011 for PSP.

I just want to say that it was this site that inspired me to dive into Ys. I had dabbled in the franchise once before - I rented and played Ys III pretty heavily on the SNES in my younger days. But I never managed to finish it. Now that I'm older and wiser, I was ready to tackle the franchise. I started with the Virtual Console release and haven't stopped since. Ys Seven was awesome. Oath in Felghana rocks. Hell, I downloaded Nightwolve's translation of the Ys Typing Tutor because I'm just that hooked now. I hope to one day see an American release of Origins on some platform. Even if it's repetitive as all get-out, I get the feeling I'd probably love it because it's built in the same engine as Oath and Ark.

Hey now! That was actually MY translation! (: Nightwolve did the hacking and some of the editing, but the bulk of the actual textual work was from me.
Also, Kurt doesn't speak for all Ys fans with his opinions on Ys Origin -- I actually really like the game a lot, as do most of us on the Ancient Land of Ys board. Some even rank it as their favorite game in the series! For me, it IS one of my LEAST favorites... but I still love it. I like to say that if Napishtim has kind of a Zelda feel, and Felghana has kind of a Metroidvania feel... then Origin has kind of an old-school Castlevania feel. The whole game takes place in the creepy depths of Darm Tower, and it's all VERY linear, and essentially split into levels. It just oozes atmosphere, and is a whole lot of fun to play -- and despite having one of the best-written stories in the series, it's also one of the most gameplay-centric (the story scenes really clash with the gameplay IMHO, and almost feel like they were lifted from some OTHER game). Overall, it's almost arcade-like in its structure.
It's a nice change of pace, if you ask me. And the soundtrack is phenomenal -- I don't care what ANYONE says. (:

I had meant to go back and lighten up the text on that a bit - I don't hate it, but I feel it's easily the weakest of the VI/Felghana/Origin trilogy. On that nebulous 10 point scale, if VI is an 8.5 and Felghana is a 9.5, then Origin is like...a 7.
I REALLY hated being cooped up in that stupid tower the whole game. I think that's honestly the biggest thing that killed it for me. Coupled with the boring graphics (except the bosses) and comparatively mediocre music, it's just...eh.

I hope one day those of us who don't speak Japanese can play Ys Origins or Ys V for ourselves. Anyway, it's good to be here among fans of the more obscure corners of gaming.

I'll give you graphics, though I do think the water effects are pretty amazing (if you have a computer powerful enough to run them at full, anyway!).
Music-wise, though, I actually think it's got a better overall soundtrack than Napishtim, by quite a bit. There are very few tracks that aren't stand-outs for me, and I'd definitely say it's probably the single most underrated Falcom soundtrack out there right now.

Napishtim overall was kinda eh too, but it has one of my favorite Ys themes (Quatera Woods) so I'll give it a pass. Origin has a cool intro and boss themes (as do they all) but outside of one or two other songs (Silent Desert) I can't even remember anything else.
Ys Seven, though, has the best soundtrack since the PCE days, it's much more consistent and has a similar style. I don't know who Falcom has for musicians these days, but they're pretty spot on.

I can agree with this, definitely. Ys Seven's soundtrack is positively amazing, and contains what I'd consider to be the best overworld theme in the entire series ("To Reveal the Way To Go"). The only modern Ys soundtracks that can compare are Felghana and Chronicles, which are arguably not very modern at all. (:
I'll also agree with Ys VI having a few select tracks that really make it stand out. For me, the (underrated) track that blows me away unlike any other is "The Depth Napishtim," the final battle theme. Whenever people name their favorite final battle themes in the series, Termination or The Strongest Foe invariably take the #1 spot... but for me and a handful of others on ALoY, it's The Depth Napishtim, without a doubt.
Still, for me, Napishtim's soundtrack overall is like... one half awesome and one half "just OK." Whereas Origin's soundtrack is basically ALL awesome. The Origin awesome never quite reaches the heights of the Napishtim awesome... but it never gets anywhere NEAR the lows of the Napishtim "just OK" tracks. So on the whole, I definitely prefer Origin's soundtrack.
Oh, and Sketcz: You are not incorrect. As far as I know, Ys V has a fully translated Deuce script sitting on Gideon Zhi's computer. But apparently, Ys V is really, really hard to hack...

Thanks for the corrections guys, but where are you getting this information?
It doesn't FEEL like it is the same musician producing both the Felghana and Chronicles soundtrack. I maintain that the latter sounds like a TIRED REHASH as opposed to the glorious rocking and sensitive balladry of the former.
As for Ys 7... where the heck is the ought-to-be-inevitable PC version?
