ALL the Capcom beat'em up owe a thank you to Final Fight. It s the original. All the beat'em ups that Capcom published, were received as spin-offs, using the FF engine and changing the rest. With Final Fight, And Street Fighter 2, Capcom were the absolute kings of the arcades at the time. I remember my fave arcade had 5 giant screen Street fighters! SEGA came long behind. Street Fighter 2 got a level of enthusiasm never seen again in the arcades.

Did the other Capcom BEUs really reuse the FF engine? Kinda makes me wonder why there never was an Arcade sequel if that's the case.
Didn't somebody on here recently state that the original Final Fight holds up a lot better than he thought it would? I wonder if I should revisit it - I've always loved the atmosphere but was spoilt by the additional techniques of the games that came afterwards. Maybe I'll be able to appreciate its super to the point nature more if I don't play with unlimited continues?

The original Final Fight is still my favorite beat 'em up of all time. Everything about it is just so classic.

I played the trilogy with a friend two weeks ago. The first one doesn't feel very dated even without dashing. Second one is very boring on Expert because enemies have stupid amounts of health. 3rd one is more manageable thanks to all the new attacks. Piledriving things with Haggar never gets old, but Rolento can go die in a fire...

That was probably me, back when I was talking about recording the GC9X Top Games segment for the game. Like I said, I thought Final Fight would, from its age, be pretty boring and repetitive. Thankfully, it has a much snappier pacing than I was expecting, so I never really got bored. Pacing is something that's really important in a beat 'em up, and it makes games like Undercover Cops turn into a total slog, and it makes Sengoku 3... well... Sengoku 3. Overall, however, I think the only Final Fight game that you really need to play is 3. I mean, the first game is good, don't get me wrong. It's amazing, given that this game set the standard for the entire genre, how fully formed it was by its release. But given the choice between Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, you're probably going to go for Doom, almost every time. Same thing applies here, y'know? 3 just kind of obsoletes the original entirely, and 2 is more of a reskin than a heavily improved sequel. ...That and Streets of Rage is way better any day, buuuut I'm losing track of the topic.

While it's nowhere near as lean as 1, I always much prefered 3 as well, so no disagreement from me.
However, with beat 'em ups, at least for me, it's always about the atmosphere as well. FF1 just feels a lot grittier than either FF3 or any SOR game (safe for maybe SOR3). Somebody on Youtube commented that Final Fight was LA, Double Dragon was NY and SOR was Miami, and to somebody who's been to none of these places, that sounds apropriate enough (well, the beach stage from Final Fight probably does that, even if the subway looks very New York). So as good as SOR is, it's got a very different feel to it. (Gameplay-wise, too - it's all about massive crowd control, whereas in SOR single enemies can be more of a threat. Technos' stuff is even more about singular foes, whereas Konami's games are even more about cannon fodder)

The original Final Fight is still the best in the series because it's so intense. There are tons of enemies on screen and they are much more aggressive than in your average beat 'em all, so it never gets boring. We're talking about the arcade original, of course, because the Snes port is garbage. If you actually play it like you mean it, it's really a blast. On top of that the level and boss design is good, and those huge sprites look amazingly advanced for a game that came out all the way back in 1989. It's still one of the best out there. The 2nd is an incredibly boring game with stages that never end and timid enemies that usually come in pairs. I don't recall the maximum number of enemies than you'll face at once, but they'll never be enough of a threat that you actually have to care. Bosses have tons and tons of health but are generally pretty useless too. Finally, Final Fight 3 is a step up from 2 because you have many more moves (including some pretty cool VS Fighting-style specials) and the levels aren't as long IIRC but it also suffers from FF2's lack of intensity. I usually only play games on Normal and I had to set it to Expert when I played it recently in hopes that enemies would stop acting like they didn't want any trouble. Even then, it's still super easy. Decent game, overrated.
