Haha, those are pretty good. It sounds like FFIX is truly a lesson in masochism.

MMORPGs are simply nauseating for me, I have no idea how I could commit myself to something so vast and arduous that isn't even in reality.

I can't talk about FFXI or WoW, but Ragnarok Online brought me great enjoyment. Explore unknown dungeons with your friends, travel the whole country* meeting different people, beat 30+ players single handed, deal with spies, diplomacy and betrayal (War of Emperium is serious business), read all that post war drama every week on the community forum, expose corrupt GMs, and after you get bored (or get a job) sell your characters for a HUGE sum of money...man that was awesome.
*In real life, not the virtual world lol

Dude. I have sooooo got to steal that line from you. It perfectly describes my main complaint with well over half of the games I don't like.

I still say the Phantasy Star MMOs are the only ones that ever really got the formula right. Nothing but instant gratification... granted, they don't have the "lasting value" of other MMOs, but most of that "lasting value" comes from drawing things out to a ridiculous extent. Better to just get on with the gameplay.
