As for me I think God of War and Earthbound are meh. OoT hasn't aged well, and I generally don't like the Zelda "series", and yes, those quotes indicate sarcasm! Final Fantasy X is just plain wrong, no ATB system, and the Sphere grid is just an illusion of depth, while you're really just guided along the same constrictive paths as the level system did.

Yeah, I pretty much feel the same. God of War seemed very generic to me and Earthbound was liked playing a wacky fan hack of Dragon Warrior 2. I never cared for much of the Zelda games... only the first one is excellent, imo... and while the second game is also really good it would have been just as good as a separate game. As for FFX I just couldn't get over the fact that every place in the game was a bunch of corridors. I've never felt so constrained before in an alleged RPG.

Now that you mention it, the Fahrenheit's inability to just cruise around the landscape was kinda offsetting for me, and indeed the whole world really does feel like just a bunch of corridors!

The Zelda series has always been kind've hit or miss with me. I HATED the original Zelda. Back in the day, before FAQs, the only way you could beat that game was by meandering aimlessly, bombing every inch of every wall and throwing flames at every bush with a candle. Even as a child, I said to myself, "Jesus Christ. This is some convoluted nonsense." And I didn't even know what convoluted meant. Similar games on NES completely murder it, such as Crystalis, Willow, and the almighty Magic of Scheherazade.
I also HATED Adventure of Link. The hit detection was horrible, the enemies were obnoxious, the jump control was ghastly and loose, and the whole package just didn't work for me.
Link to the Past though.. that game was a masterpiece. Plain and simple. It had an impeccable atmosphere and the eerily echoing worlds of darkness and light were executed with utter brilliance. It's still the most complete-feeling and well-rounded game in the franchise.
I also dug Link's Awakening on GameBoy quite a bit. Up 'til then, most GameBoy games I'd played were just time-killers to keep me busy during long drives. I didn't play them seriously. But LA was the first portable game that actually had me playing it at home, even with my consoles laying about.
When Ocarina of Time came out, I played it, I thought it was alright. Then everyone around me went apeshit about it and looked at me like an alien every time I refused to acknowledge it as the greatest game ever, in the history of the universe. The music was extremely low-quality garbage (and if you say that was because of the hardware, I beg you to play Conker's Bad Fur Day, Killer Instinct Gold, or Sin & Punishment), and some of the dungeon design was just convoluted nonsense that didn't know when to quit (the water temple.. argh). The game also couldn't maintain its atmosphere for very long. When I first got to the future period after pulling the Master Sword, and Hyrule Castle town was all messed up and filled with zombies, I was like "Whoa, cool. This is dark." Then I get outside and everything is exactly the same as it was when Link was a kid, except someone else owned the Lon Lon Ranch and Zora's Domain was frozen. Big deal.
Then I played Majora's Mask, and I have to say, that game had me entertained for quite awhile. I'd say it's one of the less appreciated titles Nintendo has made. I really liked the atmosphere, the music was somewhat better, and I liked how there was a lot more to it than just dungeons.
Wind Waker was okay, but I'm going to have to use the same tired old WW argument and say that the sailing nearly ruined it.
As for Twilight Princess, I just beat it a few days ago. and I might still be high off the experience, but I thought it was absolutely engaging and extremely well put together. Could be marginally better than Link to the Past, not sure.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents on Zelda.

I don't believe Earthbound is overrated.... it's just that when sombody is a fan of Earthbound.... they're REALLY a fan of Earthbound. Know what I'm saying? Earthbound is a quirky, simple game that doesn't appeal to everybody... but for those it does appeal to it changes their life. You're familiar with those guys at Starmen.net right? I check in there once in a while just to see... "Hmm... are these guys still as insane as they were years ago?"... and the answer is still "Yes. Holy crap, they're worse." I dont' think its' a matter of being overrated... it's not a household name... and I still play smash with people who don't know where Ness is from... it's just that the game had an effect on alot of people. That effect still lives with them to this day. I think a game is overrated when pretty much everybody you see has a positive opinion about the game because it's the norm, even if they haven't played it. Earthbound I'd still label as "slightly obscure".
You want overrated? Kingdom F*cking Hearts. There are some fans of that game that need to be locked up.

The praise for Earthbound is almost unanimous, though. Every time I ask someone why I should think Earthbound is great they're like "OMG IT'S SO SILLY AND COOKY AND CRAZY! THERE'S NEW AGE RETRO HIPPIES LOL GREATEST GAME EVER!" Nevermind the fact that it runs a battle engine from 1986. And now that you mention Smash, I'll have you know, Smash Bros. Melee is on that list.

Oh yeah, I agree. While I enjoyed the game when I played it... it didnt' change my life or anything. It's not the greatest RPG ever by a long shot. I guess, by chance, I haven't run into as much praise as you have, so I don't think of it as overrated.
And Smash Brothers.... I'm not going to lie to you. It's my favorite game ever. Don't worry. I'm not going to pointlessly and desperately defend the game and argue with you. Because there's nothing I can say that you, obviously, haven't already heard. I would like to read a cranky gamer article about it though.
And I agreed with you about Majora's Mask.

Have any of Cave's games done anything creative game play mechanics-wise after DoDonpatchi? Scoring systems don't count.
If they haven't, that's a load of cranky gaming right there. I for one don't even care about anything they've released since, well ever, actually.

ESPGaluda had the whole time-slowing-down thing, which is basically just bullet time in a shmup. Worked pretty well.
Beyond that? No, not really.

Earthbound is quite possibly the most overrated JRPG ever. Not only it's too simplistic and shallow to be enjoyable, but I can't stand the humor. It desperately tries to be hilarious, but it fails all the time.

I was taking a look at your comments about Shadow the Hedgehog, and it occured to me...
Sonic the Hedgehog is the Jeff Foxworthy of video games. It was huge for short period around 1991, nobody likes it, but it WON'T GO AWAY.

I wouldn't say no one likes it. I liked the two adventure games, heroes was tolerable and the advance games were different shades of decent.

Jeff Foxworthy of videogames? No way, because Sonic was good at least once.

Oh, absolutely. 1,2,3,& Knuckles, and Pocket Adventure are happening games. The spin-off Spinball is fantastic also. I was making a joke about the current state of the series popularity. It must be the most often pissed on series in video games. Why do they still bother? When a Sonic game is announced most people react with "Again? I can not believe this thing is still around". When people see Jeff Foxworthy on television it elicits something like "I can not believe this guy is still around". Both are viewed by most as a embaressment. Both create a Twilight Zone like effect of a sense of disbelief. Both are way more popular in America than they could ever be elsewhere.
Oh, and I am aware of it's fans being probably the most intense in video game history.
