Hi,
I'm keen to try out PC Engine CD-Rom emulation on MAME/MESS. I'm mostly interested in the shmups (Rayxanber, Gate of Thunder, etc), which I already have in some fucked up ISO/MP3 combination and play occasionally in MagicEngine.
To be able to play them in MESS (which made GREAT strides the last few years), I would need to have them in the CHD format (which is a good move, since this guarantees a correct, standardized rip)
So anybody would know where to look for these?

Not to be an asshole but... why not just keep using Magic Engine or Ootake (which is the best PCE emu out there) that have close to perfect emulation of everything PC Engine? MESS is, well... a mess. I don't know anyone that would use it for any console older than 1980 considering most of their drivers are terribly incomplete, even if they have made a lot of progress. As for finding isos in CHD format, good luck with that. I've never seen one. Your best bet is to convert them yourself from bin/cue combinations. Here are tons of bin/cue downloads: www.mondemul.net/zisos.php?genre=liste&type=pcecd

Rey, man, that link... you are a true internet hero-- perhaps a real life hero! Much appreciated; iso/mp3 formats were the bane of my (burning games to CDs to play them on consoles) existence.
Thanks!

There are still lots of games missing, but it's still a good archive.

Plenty thanks for teh link! Support has been added fairly recently so it might be a while until they would turn up somewhere.
I don't agree with your MESS statement though - most of the well known consoles run close to perfect. Actually I don't use MESS itself (since the console drivers are now integrated in MAME Plus! for a truly/nearly emulate-everything solution.
But I digress - gonna play Thunder some more.

MESS is, well... a mess. I don't know anyone that would use it for any console older than 1980 considering most of their drivers are terribly incomplete, even if they have made a lot of progress. Ha ha well that's why they call it MESS... I have used it to play some atari 5200 and 7800 games. I've also tried it for its Tandy Color Computer emulation. I agree that it can be daunting and difficult to setup but I can't complain about its usefulness. In the case of the Color Computer I was impressed that they fully emulated the use of virtual cassettes. Basically you told MESS that you had a virtual cassette tape player "attached" to your Coco. After that MESS would allow you to load and save Tandy Coco games that were on cassette form. It even emulates the high pitched sound it makes. Of course you would have these cassette tapes as rom images somewhere on your hard drive, but it was a nice touch. It's totally nerdy, and it does require some familiarity with the original hardware but it was fun to figure out.

If MESS supports CD emulation (dunno if it does, never tried it), you can always just mount the bin/cues in Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools and just run it from there. Sure beats converting every image.

As far as I know MESS/Mame Plus! doesn't support running real CD's.. but some dude on the forum was asking the exact same question and then came up with the solution.
So now I have a nice tidy collection of CHD's to be run directly in MESS/Mame Plus! (which I personally prefer over having to swap images in Daemon, less disk space too), but it seems the emu is having trouble with my syscards. These work just fine in Ootake but then again MESS tends to be more unforgiving with imperfect dumps. Anyone know where to get the GoodPCE syscard set?
Cheers

Well yes.. but don't bother, I did find an archive which containts about five different dumps of every syscard revision. All of them work in anything but Mess, and none of them do work in Mess, even when loaded as a Hu-Card... enough proof for me that ima need to wait a bit more until PCE CD support matures a little bit.

Say, I have a question of my own. I have many games in WAV/ISO form... but no .cue sheets. How would I go about finding a way to play these, or make a cue sheet myself?
Oh, and my computer does not like actual PCE CDs. I already tried my Rondo of Blood, and my computer doesn't like it.

Download Sega Cue Maker. It will make it for you automatically.

Got it working, hell yeah The PCE CD driver in Mess 0.130 had some errors, which are fixed in the latest build (SVN 4412) After I've followed the procedure i have it now working in Mess Emulation's pretty good actually, not 100%, but managed to get halfway through Gate Of Thunder, awesome music
