I have a really nice, well-maintained MAME set up with all databases, art, screenshots, etc; and I would like to update it to the latest version (0.130, mine is 0.118b). I know that if I just overwrite everything some files will be lost, so should I just re-download the entire thing again? Or how does one usually go about it?
Thanks.

Pretty sure when I update(copy over the files that are already there), my setting stay the same.

Then don't copy/unzip the new config file.

If you want to check over the files, it extracts like a zip file, usually, I don't know if there are versions that actually install. So you could extract to a different folder and just copy over what you want, if you want to be safe, but I've never had an issue just copying over what I had before.

When you install a new MAME, all you need to copy over the old one is the MAME.exe
Your config files will stay the same unless you have a really old MAME (which is your case). MAME has made a lot of changes since the version you have and don't expect your configuration to be kept. But it's just a matter of configuring them again if they get lost.
None of your folders get overwritten. If you by any chance overwrite, let's say, a full screenshots folder with an empty one, it will just merge and not replace the older one. So don't worry about that.
