The SNES original.
The normal ROM itself works fine, but when I try to use the patch with it, the Atlus logo screen displays Bad Checksum in yellow. The game runs, but everything is out of whack, if it even makes it to the title screen.
I'm using SNES9x, and the rom titled 'Digital Devil Story (V1.0) (J)' as the readme requested, but that one's given me more trouble than the one I found listed as 'Shin Megami Tensei'.
Hm, I downloaded a version that was prepackaged, and it seems to be working fine.
Still shows the same error in the beginning though.

"Bad Checksum" is probably going to happen with any patched ROM, and that's SNES9x displaying the message and not SMT. As for the issue itself, I honestly never got this game to work reliably (I had managed to patch it and run in ZSNES 1.36 back in the day, but it would routinely freeze at the end of the naming sequence).

I think it has to run in SNES9x for some reason. I think I read thats omewhere. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Though I have the same problem where I patch my own rom, it fucks up, but a pre-patched one works fine.

Sometimes with SNES roms you have to delete or add a header before applying a patch. SNEStool is good for that(yes it's DOS, but still runs normally in ...well, XP at least): www.romhacking.net/utils/18/From the documentation that comes with the patch (hint: be sure to read those before jumping into applying a patch): --------------------------------- 4.1 The Game that Hates Emulators --------------------------------- The following issues are emulator issues and are NOT caused by the patch. It is recommended that you use SNES9X with the game, as ZSNES has a fairly major bug which causes the game to lock up. The following are known issues: Issue: Game locks up when changing scenes This is a problem with ZSNES' SPC engine. Use SNES9X. Issue: The top half of the names in the stat window are missing. This is a problem with ZSNES. Use another emulator. Issue: Demon fusion graphics are garbled. Issue with both SNES9X and ZSNES' graphics engines. I think. Issue: Fuma Bell effect does not wear off. I have no idea what causes this, but it's an emulator issue.

BSNES is the only emulator I've ever played this game in that didn't screw up the fusion screen.

SMT will not run in any playable capacity with ZSNES. I've had the most luck with SNES9x GX on the Wii of all things.

BSNES is the only emulator I've ever played this game in that didn't screw up the fusion screen. Actually, newer releases of SNES9X actually finally fixed that up, so the fusion screen looks fine on it.
