hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/joymechafight/joymechafight.htmI had never heard of this game until ZZZ submitted this article. It's quite good - easily the best 2D 8-bit fighter out there, even though it takes a little bit of getting used to. As far as I know, it's also the only 2D one-on-one fighter made by Nintendo (Killer Instinct doesn't count.) Are there any others?

In house Nintendo developed fighting games? The only one I can think of is Urban Champion which sucks like no other.
Other than that, there's the Super Smash Bros. series handled by HAL Labs with Brawl being developed by an unnamed developer, Jump Super and Ultimate Stars handled by Ganbarion. The only other game I can think of wouldn't matter, as Nintendo of America published Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the Super NES and Street Fighter II for the Gameboy.
Anyway zzz, great article. About time this game got some recognition. Wish it didn't come out so late in the Famicom's life so it could have had a possible chance of leaving Japan. For some reason though, I always assumed that Teleroboxer was a sort of spirtual succesor to this game albeit not nearly as good.

Does the title screen actually say Joy Mecha Fight? The rom says Mech, so that is what I assumed it was called.
This is among my favorite games ever made. Recommended to everybody!
It is worth playing to see the 28 kick ass non playable boss chracters in 1 Player War Mode alone. It would be the coolest freaking thing ever if Nintendo were to rerelease this game in it's exact original form, except with all 36 characters playable.
Nintendo fighters? Second party: KI and Smash. First party: Urban Champion. WHICH I LIKE!
A few points:
Second paragraph ends with a comma rather than a period.
Sukapon is the first character in 1 Player War Mode only. 1 Player vs. Computer and 1 Player vs 2 Player have every playable character available from the beginning.
In Eye's profile adding "for some reason" might imply that it does not have a point. The move will casue damage to a opponent if they make contact with him while he is still in that animation.
In the first paragraph after the character profiles it claims that there are seven opponents selectable at the beginning of each level. There are seven in the first and eight in each level after that.
Matches sometimes last a bit too long? Maybe I play really agressively or something. I never noticed that.
The paragraph next to the last screenshot. It says "as a projectile hits YOU foe" rather than your.
Anyhow, thanks and EXALTS. Nice to see this go up.

Technically the word is "meka", which is a borrowed Japanese word that refers to these kinds of robots or anything mechanical. Translating it as "mech" or "mecha" is a matter of preference, but I prefer the latter, since it's closer to how it sounds when pronounced. I also wasn't entirely sure about "Sukapon" and "Skapon" since I think the latter name was used in the translation because the full name wouldn't fit.
The long match times were mentioned in another review. I think it's being too used to the 2 out of 3 matches, but I kinda felt the same way too.

This was one of the first Famicom games I owned. I bought it from Games to Go because the cartridge looked interesting and it appeared to be from Nintendo. (This was before we had internet access) I'm glad it's getting a little attention, although I think people won't realize how good this game looks until they see it in motion.

Sukapon profile: "Sukapon is the first robot you control in single player mode".
Should probably say "Sukapon is the first robot you control in the game's story mode" or something like that. All eight playable characters are available in 1 Player vs. Computer Mode.
First paragraph after the character profiles: "At the beginning of the game, you can only use Sukapon"
Should probably say something like "At the beginning of the game's story mode, you can only use Sukapon" for the same reason. It might be worth noting in the entry that all eight playable characters are playable from the beginning in the other two modes.

Speaking of NES fighters, has anyone played the bootleg "Street Fighter III" for the NES? Really good.

The bootleg NES fighters crack me up. KOF99, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Street Fighter III... it's hilarious stuff.
