I don't use Facebook as an online journal thing, but I use LJ for that.
Also, Facebook's more for RL friends while Livejournal's for online friends and a select few RL friends.

I think the reason they're doing this is because the big corporations don't want competition from all the amateurs that are making better content than they are. But the whole reason the internet is better than television is because of the amateur content.
Imagine if in the future the internet was only big corporate sites and teenagers' journals. That seems to be the direction that the big corporations want things to move in. If that's the case then expect a lot of people to stop using the internet as much or even altogether, just like what's happened with television.

Where exactly will HG101 be headed, and when will the transition be made?

I've been creeped out from Facebook ever since hearing about that kid in Mexico who got kidnapped and murdered by some gang who was tracking his every movement and habits through that site.
You could say the same about LJ, but at least it's not as mainstream and open as Facebook and the people there don't drop off everything about them. Except in a past tense maybe, lol.

Facebook is supposed to be a lot less anonymous than other social networking sites, though. They're pretty strict about deleting accounts with fake names, and nobody can view another person's profile without being accepted as a friend first. It can make it a little difficult to see who's really whom if you're trying to find someone, but it also provides a great level of protection from stalkers.

Twitter and LJ are pretty much all I use - everything else I find to be cumbersome and overloaded and/or just plain shitty. Those two work fine for my devices and that's good enough for me.
------------
This recent trend of websites just shutting down all their free hosting services bothers me. Not all of us have money and/or the HTML skills to keep a full, nicely done site up. I know I have neither. I can understand wanting to save money, but to just dump this on us with not much time to back things up and migrate elsewhere is kind of dickish.
Classicgaming hosts a tremendous amount of quality content - I hope they're ready for any backlashes and such that might come from announcing such things.

Wow this really sucks, there are tons of good sites on the ClassicGaming network. Now I have to go through all my bookmarks to pay last respects to some of the links.
This place better not kick the bucket, or I'll be pissed.

It can make it a little difficult to see who's really whom if you're trying to find someone, but it also provides a great level of protection from stalkers. That isn't necessarily true, but Facebook has relatively good security settings that can make it that way. By default, anyone in your network can see your full profile, but you can change it to only friends or go the exact opposite and let anyone ever see your profile. I don't know why you'd do that, but some people are attention whores.

Thank goodness the best sites are saved. That said, it's an incredible shame. Battletoads, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Ninja Gaiden, ROTT, Streets of Rage, Strider, maybe even SegaFans. Lots of good memories there...hope most of the lot is saved.

First: This sucks, and I have to wonder if it's too late to start a petition or something, as it really would be ridiculous to lose all that content.
Second: To add my two cents to the discussion on here, I absolutely refuse to use Facebook on general principle. I use LiveJournal, and ONLY LiveJournal, and that's all I ever intend to use, for as long as I'm able. (:

Man, that's shitty news. :/ Does this mean FilePlanet's going bye-bye, too? And do you know where your sites are going, Kurt? A new free hosting service or maybe even their own domains? Fileplanet as a whole is staying, as is our access for it. So all of the files - past and future - will continue to be hosted there too. I think the Classicgaming domain is TECHNICALLY still going to be around, with all of its primary content, but the fan sites - the bread and butter, really - are what's being axed. I talked to Rob (of the Ghoul Realm, West Mansion, and OPCFG) to see about getting those moved over, as well as Deuce for the Ninja Gaiden and Ys pages, as well as TJ and CapcomMBD at the Metroid Database. Hopefully we can get in contact with enough people to make sure they're at least archived properly. I'm gonna do some editing this weekend hopefully to at least get the Contra and Castlevania sites up, then move onto HG101 within a week or so.

I have a friend with a half-TB hard drive with plenty of space he'd be willing to offer, if that helps.

Aw this is sad news, and like Feyman said, it does feel like slolwy but surely all the really cool stuff you used to find on the 'net is disapearing

Excuse me for being a bit dense, but I've yet to read something that specifically states what's gonna happen to HG101. The site needs to be moved elsewhere, right?
Makes my fear for my lousy Geocities site feel so silly by comparison. Looks like I need to whip out Website Copier as well.

Sucks :/ I always had a closet fantasy of starting up my own site to get on classicgaming, for the Power Instinct series. I made some headway on geocities but found my motivation as a web developer was pathetic . A lot of my internet surfing has been dictated by the great sites on classicgaming. At least there's time to back everything up hopefully.
