I believe that I have played Savage Reign very little. It truly is mediocre as far as SNK fighters go... and I don't even like to use the word "mediocre!"
Kizuna Encounter is a new beast altogether, and it's actually quite kickass. Granted, the roster isn't the most memorable in the SNK archives, but at least Hayate and Jyazu did appear in KoF XI.
It also has the best start to a fighting game: Instead of any big set-up declaring which round it is and leading into an overenthusiastic "FIGHT!", we just have this somewhat bored guy just casually pronouncing "Beat Up" to kick off the match. Tell me that doesn't rule somehow.

But I like the "YOU READY? SURE LET'S HAVE A GREAT SHOWTIME! HEAVEN OR HELL! DUEL ONE! LET'S ROCK!" And yet I can't say I don't like the idea of someone just saying "sure, go fight or something" before a match.

Nothing beats the Fight Fever intro for getting you ready to fight. "You want? Taekwando Champ of the World"

Interesting article, I never got into these games but am going to pick them up when they are released for the Neo Geo Online Collection series. According to Gamebrink, these games are going to be next in the series. I was hoping for Samurai Spirits, but SR/KE will do. www.gamebrink.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14602

I just read this article, and I have to congratulate you on probably the funniest, best written article yet. The character intro part alone made me crack up tons!
It's pretty hard to see the name King Lion and not be constantly reminded of The Lion King.
EDIT: Oh, and Max Eagle and Brian Battler from King of Fighters...does SNK think Americans are just cheesy?

It's how Japan works. No Americans in the pop culture unless they're absurdly American.

I notice the article only list King Lion (Kage Shishioh) and not King Leo (Shin Shishioh). Their not separate versions of the same character (like Ryu and Evil Ryu), but actual different characters. King Lion is the Shadow Shishioh, a doppelganger who poses as Shishioh, while King Leo (the non-playable boss) is the True Shishioh, who is Eagle's brother.

Nothing beats the Fight Fever intro for getting you ready to fight. "You want? Taekwando Champ of the World" I loved that line so much I once gave Han Baedal a bit part in an online improfic. The only thing he could say was "You want? Taekwondo Champ of the World!" over and over again. Also, I actually prefer Savage Reign to Kizuna Encounter. I didn't like the removal of Nicola and Carol, and I actually liked how Savage Reign tried to be something different, with the "Weapon Throw" BC mechanic and such. Rosa and Grandson Kim didn't quite do it for me, nor did the Real Bout-esque dial-a-comboing. Kizuna's not BAD, or anything, I just felt like it lost quite a bit of Savage Reign's uniqueness.
