hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/mooncrystal/mooncrystal.htmAnother article about a cool little Famicom game. This was something I was introduced to years ago and was pretty impressed by. Of course, its flaws become more apparent as you get farther in the game, but it's still pretty cool. Fantastic animation for a Famicom game, and not too bad of a plot either.

Holy shit! Y'know what I was just in the process of typing in the Cocoron thread when you posted this? I was gonna recommend that you check this game out! Imagine my surprise when I refreshed the other window I had open and saw that you had just posted an article about it that very minute!
EDIT:
And yeah, the animation and cut scenes in this game are INCREDIBLE. Probably only Recca and Joy Mecha Fight push the hardware harder than this.
DOUBLE EDIT:
I'm glad you mentioned the multi-plane backgrounds. That was the thing that really wowed me when I first played it.

Interesting looking game indeed. I do wonder though, is there any listing on who did the character art? It looks a heck of a lot like the woman who did Please Save my Earth, or at least the female does.

Never heard of this one; I'll have to check this one out soon. But in the meantime, some nitpicking...!
I don't know what it is about this sentence, but...
More fastidiousness:
1.) I think the final paragraph could be moved elsewhere. The second-to-last paragraph might be better note on which to conclude the article.
2.) "-" is a hypen. "--" is a dash.

Interesting article- I remember digging this game out of my CD of NES roms and being intrigued by it at one point, but I never really investigated further.
The article does feel like it ends pretty abruptly, though.

While we're on the subject of obscure Famicom side-scrollers, here are three other games you might wanna check out:
Getsufuu Maden
Konami 8-bit action side-scroller. No game with that description should be this obscure, but this particular title has somehow managed to remain virtually unheard of outside of Japan (where it was actually popular enough to make the Virtual Console).
Mitsume ga Tooru
Surprisingly decent action game. Not much to say about it, except that it has some bigass bosses.
Journey to Silius
This one actually got released in English. I have no explanation for why it's still so obscure, because it's actually pretty good. In fact, it's actually one of the better side view run 'n guns of its time (though certainly not on par with Contra by any means).

I was under the impression that Journey to Silius was fairly well-known in gamer circles, if only for being impossibly hard.
Speaking of which: I have heard pervasive rumors that the reason Journey to Silius has such suspiciously high production values is that it was originally designed based on a Terminator liscence, which was pulled at the last minute (which is also why the last boss bears a strong resemblance to a giant T-800 and why everything looks post-apocalyptic). Has anyone seen actual conformation of this anywhere?

Journey to Silius is not good. No game should have unavoidable attacks in the first stage, nor should it combine difficult platforming with respawning enemies.

1.) I think the final paragraph could be moved elsewhere. The second-to-last paragraph might be better note on which to conclude the article. I actually moved it around a few times - I couldn't quite find a way to get things to flow properly. I might fix it around further so it seems more natural.

Just tried this one out last night and I'm pretty impressed. While the controls do present some issues for me, they're most certainly better than Prince of Persia's. I'll have to stick this one on my PSP, I could get a lot of mileage out of it.

So how do I play Famicom titles on my NES?

So how do I play Famicom titles on my NES? A converter. Don't know how easy they are to find nowadays - I got one from some dude in Brazil like ten years ago. Otherwise, you could always get one of those NES/Famicom clones. They usually have a slot for FC games. They're a bit cheaply made so they have issues with certain games, but other than some slighty-off sound, they're not too bad if the price is low. I've never seen the actual cart for sale anywhere though, so I dunno the going price.

Can a top-loading NES2 play Famicom carts unmodded? I heard that somewhere.

Can a top-loading NES2 play Famicom carts unmodded? I heard that somewhere. Nope. They have different pin configurations, they won't fit. What I think you heard is that top loaders can play European NES games without any mods. I've never tested this, though - I have a few Euro games but no top loader. Working on that one now, actually. It must've had some success considering its characters/locations ended up in both Wai Wai World games. I found out about this one when I realized my Natsume NES article was missing some games. I'll get around to adding this over there eventually, along with one or two others I missed.
