Am I the only person who thinks of Sin and Punishment's side scrolling level when I watch videos of this on Youtube? Treasure so desperately deserve an article here. I hope it happens sometime... My favorite track was Rock is Sponge. I hated the trance mission because the music sucks (it's just messed up sound... doesn't do it for me.) Probably because it was one of the two tracks contributed by Markus "Oval" Popp. Haven for elitist IDM geeks everywhere. See under "tracks appear on", Octaeder 0.1. and P-Project are on the Rez OST. Yes, this guy makes music from CD glitches. Rock is Sponge is awesome, but the version featured on the OST takes faaaar too long to go anywhere. It's already a very repetitive track. The best tune in the game is definitely the Ken Ishii piece. Much more melodic.

Nice article and appreciate linking my Taromaru review! I enjoyed Taromaru for the 3+ years I owned it, probably beat it 20, 25 times. This past September I finally decided to let it go... bought it for 80 sold it for 140. It was like someone had paid me $60 to borrow it for 3 years and max out its playing value... hey I can't complain now can I

Was that supposed to be a Choaniki commercial or something?

i would like to thank the guys that wrote the Rez article. as a designer, i have read and appreciated kandinsky's art works (paintings and books)... and i must say that little insight was great, cos reading and interpretating kandinsky's work is REALLY hard.
i would like to ask/add something: was the design team also inspired by tomato's work? tomato is a collective that changed the look of graphic design in the 90's, did the graphics on Trainspotting and the visuals of Underworld, an *awesome* electronic band that composed the song 'Rez', where the name of the game comes from.

God, I love Galbadia Hotel. Though... heh. My favorite is actually FEAR, if you can believe that.

I disagree. Solaris is far more impressive looking than the Star Wars title and pulls off psuedo 3D quite well. There's also Radar Lock, Moonsweeper, and Tunnel Runner, all of which pull off some nice pseudo 3D on the system.

I completely forgot about Solaris while writing, and I'm not sure I've played any of those other games! ... heh... ummmmm... Kurt? S'okay if you can make an appropriate edit?

Anyhoo, manto, I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your question, but I will accept the praise for writing the bulk of the Rez article... however, the schtuff about Kandinsky was all Pitchfork, so go thank him even more. anyway, here's the link to rez video. i would like to note about the visuals, since that's tomato trademark style... i think i have an old number of Muzik around my house and it has a little insight about rez (the game LOL), so i'll tell you if i find something, ok? www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0oMwKnU3OMand i remember some pics of the 'usage' of the trance vibrator... ewwwww... XDDD

Try Hallucinogen, Pleiadians - IFO (DO NOT bother with Seven Sister Seven), L.S.G. (don't go further than The Black Album), or for something more ambient Tetsu Inoue.

I concur with you on Tetsu Inoue. I hear him all the di.fm Ambient channel. Anyway -- NR, if you're looking for electronic tunes to zone out to, I'd just skip right to psytrance. The biggest name there is Infected Mushroom, but...it's probably easier to just go here than hunt around for specific .mp3's.

The biggest name there is Infected Mushroom, but...it's probably easier to just go here than hunt around for specific .mp3's. I don't want to take this thread any more off topic but... I would not agree with this - the Mushies are hideously overrated, they let the silly sound effects and noises take over and forgot how to write melodies. If you must try them, don't go any further than Classical Mushroom. Sure there's probably other good psy out there, but - in the event that you may actually take my advice - the only album I truely recommend in that genre (take my word for it I've tried a LOT of psy) is Tea Chairs. Or maybe, if you're brave enough, Safi Connection. But frankly, Rez has no psytrance in it. It's all rather more restrained spacey techno and "trance", and the better for it. I like psy at times, but it would be far far too overpowering as a soundtrack to Rez. Goa stuff like Pleiadians might be better, but it's still a lot less accessible than the music Rez already has. Which is yet another strength of the game.
