Vagrant Story is awesome, one of the few PSX games I wish I still had... But I can see why many people hated it, it can be nearly impossible to play the first time if you don't understand the system.

It's kind of strange when an article on this site makes me want to check out an author more than it makes me want to play the game it's about. Brilliant none the less.

To me, the best RPGs for the system were Grandia, Vagrant Story and Valkyrie Profile.
Very refreshing read by Mr. Smith (of whom I would like to see the rest of his repertoire), and probably the best article I have read on this site. I would have liked a little bit more insight into the game's bosses, it's combo system, and above all Ashley's submerging cinematic interations with the bad guys. I'm also glad to finally see captions under screenshots. Hope this becomes the trend.

I like vagrant story. It is one of my favorite ps1 rpgs along with the lunar games, final fantasy tactics, xenogears, etc.

Vagrant Story is definitely one of the best PSX games ever conceived.

Man, that had to have been the most pretentious article I've seen on this site. The game's mechanics (a.k.a. the reason why everyone hates it) aren't even touched upon.

They are explained, but it's left up to the reader to determine whether it's a good thing or not. But this isn't meant to be that type of review. While it may come off as pretentious, I'm open to having other types of critiques on this site, which is why it's pretty non-standard for an HG101 article. It makes for interesting reading, at least - the pros and cons of Vagrant Story have been debated elsewhere thousands of times over since its release, so this type of analysis is refreshing.

It's certainly an interesting and refreshingly different feature. I have to admit though, Vagrant Story is one of my all-time favourite games and when I saw there was a feature on it my heart leapt, anticipating a definitive, comprehensive writeup. Still, it was a good read.

VS is a beautiful PSX game, and has a great story and fantastic characters, but I think the gameplay is the most needlessly complex, unfun mess of a game I've ever played. To this day I've never finished the game because it infuriates me so much.

Thanks for the responses to my article! The article itself was a labor of love - not only for Vagrant Story, but obviously for Campbell as well. It was rather difficult combining a traditional HG101 analysis within a discussion of the monomyth structure - I was quite literally working on this comparison article for weeks (and admittedly, the original text file when I "first" started working on the first draft was from 2005). But eventually I had the epiphany and all the content eventually slid into place within the monomyth itself. Yes, a few details were left out, but ultimately they had no place within the larger thesis of the article, which was the comparison with the monomyth. This includes what I consider an important detail for people having trouble with the game: that every time you chain, damage goes up by 1. So even if you have a 0 damage estimate, by the time you get around to 15 chains, which is fairly easy once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to deal 100 damage or more. But yeah, for this kind of stuff, GameFAQs, yes, HG101 - maybe not all the time yeah kinda maybe.

Man, that had to have been the most pretentious article I've seen on this site. The game's mechanics (a.k.a. the reason why everyone hates it) aren't even touched upon. As you might notice by reading this thread, not 'everyone' hates it by a long margin. Maybe you'd like to explain what is wrong with the mechanics of the game in your opinion?
