Thanks. I totally agree about Carrey's Riddler, too. The superfluous crotch bulge from that movie was probably more offensive than the nipples on the Bat suit.

I guess one of the reasons I'm a hater on Forever was that I'd been used to the portrayals on the (then) Fox Animated Series, which were pretty subdued compared to the whole Cirque du Chauve-Souris that was Forever.
Speaking of Batman, I'm looking forward to playing "10 OUT OF 10" Batman Arkham City when I get home.

Ah, true. It was a complete tonal shift from the previous two movies, and all three up to that point were nothing like the cartoon series, either. I dunno, I had started watching the 60's show when the first movie came out in 89, so maybe I was already used to the idea of multiple interpretations by the time Forever came around.
The one thing that bugs me the most about Forever is that it's ALMOST a good Batman movie. There are some good ideas hidden underneath all of the Hollywood nonsense. I like the idea of Dent trying to lure Batman into a trap by using an innocent person as bait. It's positively true. For good or ill, the Dark Knight absolutely cannot stand by and watch while an innocent life is in danger, even if it could mean his own death.
You can see that Bruce is also struggling with his identity, which is something of a theme with most of the characters throughout the entire story. There's a moment where Bruce is talking to Alfred about how Two Face murdered Dick's parents and brother at the circus, and he says, "I killed them" instead of "he killed them". A little later, he confronts Dick in the stolen Batmobile and says with absolute honesty, "If Bruce Wayne could have given his life to save your family, he would have." This is an absolutely genuine Batman moment BUUUUUT, it's lost underneath the incredibly tepid acting of Val Kilmer, the day-glo neon set design, and the studio's decision to make the franchise into a family-friendly moneymaker, instead of just something that tells a good / interesting story.
Of course, it also doesn't help that the boat, plane and costumes at the end of the film are all clearly there only to serve as material for toys, rather than functionality. Naturally, Schumacher repeated this trick for the end run in Batman & Robin.
Whatever the case may be, I'm honestly glad we didn't get Batman Triumphant. The last thing we needed was some kind of ill-conceived sequence featuring Jack Nicholson flashbacks. It would have been like all those sequences with The Boss in Peace Walker. You can't make something bad into something good just by repeatedly saying, "This part from the old stuff was good, right? RIGHT?"

My favorite idea out of the whole Batman Forever movie I think has to be the Riddlers obsession. I know Carrey didn't portray it right. But you could tell that underneath the Frank Gorshin-impersonation was the idea of a man madly obsessed with the idea Batman and what made him tick. If you take the mind tapping subplot it becomes obvious that whoever wrote the script might have been influenced by Hugo Strange's character when writing the Riddler.
Aside, from that I find the movie a tad bit mediocore. Whereas everyone in B&R are playing a comedy with larger than life characters, Batman Forever seems to be stuck midway between not knowing whether to go down the knew route with neon sets, sexualized costumes, and other jokiness or sticking with somber mood of the original and interesting yet truly bizarre characterization.
I hear it's from the fact that the three main leads absolutely hated each other. One would take offense to the smallest slight, another was incredibly jealous of one, and I guess it was just like wrangling a bunch of kids and trying to get them to work together. Ironically, I think it was Tommy Lee Jones who wouldn't partake in any of this stupidity, and it's clear he gave the most balance performance out of all of them.

I have to say- the U2 and Seal songs were better than R feckin' Kelly and the rather tepid Pumpkins song.

The one by Seal was quite good. The U2 one... not so much.

That "Gotham City" song by R. Kelly is just confusing. A city of justice? A city of love? A city of peace?
So I pull out my gun!

The more you and Joseph Joestar post the more I am convinced we need a HG101 meetup I need to think about getting a luchador mask so my secret identity is safe in case this becomes a reality. I also need to stop being horrifyingly overweight so people's minds don't snap and they go join a death cult or fly off to space in a brain jar in retaliation. That being said, it'd be fucking awesome to hang out with you guys. As for the R. Kelly song, Jason beat me to it - it's like R. Kelly was told to come up with the lyrics to a "Visit (Blank) City" tourism song, and then came up with the lyrics in the car on the way to his statutory rape hearing. That's probably the most glowing review of Gotham City outside of what you'd hear about Earth Three Gotham (I'm guessing... since bad guys are good guys there, or were, Gotham would be like Vancouver or San Diego). As for Karaoke, it's one of the songs in my Christmas Party rotation (I use the "black guy" voice) along with Pussy Control, Strokin', and In Dreams.

We'll have to play some fighting games while drunk. Levels the playing field for everyone. Damn shame that Prince won't let his music onto Rock Band, though. A full band playthrough of Purple Rain would make my day.

Although I have absolutely no experience with Rock Band, that sounds excellent.
Alternately, I'm pretty sure the three of us could make for an interesting podcast.

Apropos of next to nothing:
HD televisions with overscan areas. (That is, their resolution is just-a-little-under 1080p vertically, so the top and bottom tend to get cut off of images)
