I think the picture labeled "American Cover" might actually be the Japanese one, but I could be wrong.

Indeed, it's the SS cover. Also, I think you meant to refer to "palette" when you wrote "palate." Otherwise, great article on one of the best shooters ever!

Good stuff on a great game. Without even getting into the excellent gameplay, I think this game does the transforming mecha shooter better than any other shooter simply because you can alternate between them without having to worry about a separate button like in so many other attempts. Or randomized ones in the case of Transbot (dunno why that got in my head all of a sudden).
One thing that always struck me as weird about the arcade original is that, at least as shown on Saturn and MAME, the ship explosions are green instead of the traditional red/orange, which was later fixed for the Saturn mode. I thought it was a glitch with MAME, but it was still there when I played it on the Saturn as well.
Anyway, I noticed one thing on the second paragraph after the ship intros, in the seventh sentence. It needs a noun after the word obvious. As written, it says, "Besides the obvious of destroying enemies."

I've played this before. Pretty fun game, not my favorite shooter, but it's pretty fun.

I'm definitely going to check this one out. I've yet to find a shooter that satisfied me as much as Gate of Thunder when I played it this year.

Does anybody here like Batsugun? That game is fucking hard as nails. Manic shmups are not my neck of the woods.

^ I liked Batsugun, but not as much as some others. Manic shmups aren't my fave, either. DoDonPachi, Batsugun, etc. I rather play a "straight" shmup like Layer Section or Souky. Hyper Duel, true story, I got this for FREE. CIB mint, too. I did a write-up on the game in 2005, I liked it then. Nothing "special" but fun and solid shooting.

I just won a copy of Souky the other day for 31 bucks. Mint with spine card. Yay.

Hard? I think you need more practice. Batsugun is medium difficulty. Batsugun Special Ver. is like the easiest manic ever. Both versions are awesome though.
