Interesting article, though I have one suggestion regarding pictures. Comparing "Son of a submariner!" and "Son of a sandworm!" seems pointless, because both are clever, fitting and most of all, similar. It would be better to compare "he'd slit his mama's throat for a nickel!" to "he'd turn on his best friend for the right price...", if you ask me- that represents a change in translation styles. I would not agree Alexander Smith’s tortured, pretentious writing represents good or appropriate translation work. Painfully contrived, faux-Victorian dialogue that reads like it was written by a high school English major who dresses up as Legolas at Renaissance Faires and speaks only in Lord of the Rings quotes is not what comes to mind when I think of graceful writing idioms. Sadly, I can't comment on Vagrant Story, but I've seen people make the same complaint about the recent Final Fantasy Tactics re-translation, and it baffles me. The game is very rooted in medieval society, politics, religion and even design... giving it 'faux-Victorian' dialogue just seems like a natural fit and, in my view at least, makes it a lot more engrossing.

Magic Knight Rayearth... wow, give me kiddy dialog over that juvenile shit any day.

What's funny, is I told my Mom about the Alundra "head" picture. She laughed. Said she understood exactly why SCEA said no, but it was a great joke.

Yeah, those screenshots were pretty cool. Classic WD, through and through. Say what anyone will, I miss 'em!

Nice work CJ Iwakura.
I had actually tried to contact Vic via NeoGAF for the article that ended up on HG101, but twice when i registered my account was instantly deleted by the mods. Despite the fact the emails I used were from pay-for email suppliers.
I mean seriously. What the fuck is up with NeoGAF's approval policy? I gave up after the second time. Maybe I should have stuck with it - Vic might have been able to share some really cool info.
Also, how much does Magic Knight Rayearth go for these days? I've always wanted to try it.

Heh, I'd have probably been too dumb to understand what that Alundra line meant when I played it back then but...wow. Anyone remember what that line was changed to in the retail release? Coincidentally another line from that same part got stuck in my head to this day. Meia says somthing like "Curse my hide for not packing power bars." When you have to jump on her to weigh down a switch.

Even if you join the forums at neogaf, you still have to wait like 10 years for them to approve you.

Last I checked? $50, which is a ridiculously good deal for a game that historic. And yeah, I signed up for GAF around a year ago. Still waiting. Ah well, as long as I can read Vic's posts, I'm content. Now why doesn't he post here?

Not that it's terribly relevant, but how many WD games are covered on the site other than Popful Mail and Silhouette Mirage?

My sign up to NeoGAF was rejected after 2 days. Outright rejected. Does anyone know how to contact Vic? All emails I've used have turned up nothing. I even tracked down his previous colleagues, and got nothing.

I've got dibs on Lunar(I think), and I might do Dragon Force at some point. As for Vic, it seems like the easiest way to contact him is through the threads he posts in at GAF.

Pity. I'll have to beg someone I know to PM him.
I might do the Exile games, btw. (which is my way of hinting: for the love of god, somebody help me with screengrabs)
