I spent a good portion of my morning workday thinking about lunch. Most of my bosses are out of the office so I decided to go for a bit of adventuring, down to a fast food restaurant called Checkers. I've never been there before (I think it's the only one I've seen in Jersey) but it was pretty good! Definitely the best $2.50 hamburger I've had (similar to the Quarter Pounder but less greasy, plus red onions) plus they had chili cheese fries. Not as good as the Coney Island ones out in Pennsylvania, but decent.
I would eat at Qdoba's more, but it's kinda far, and parking in the stupid rich town it's located in is a bitch. Baha Fresh is closer but it's crap. There's a Desert Moon Cafe not far from my apartment, which I guess is similar? For that matter, anyone ever tried Chipotle? Apparently it used to be owned by McDonalds?
I need more food suggestions.

I live in Arizona as well, but in a small town. We have too many mexican restaurants and too many chinese restaurants here. Only one of the mexican restaurants has pretty standard service, and only one of the chinese restaurants is good. Other than that, we have like a few fast food places and a few other sit-down places such as Golden Corral.

I tried two new good places QPS:It's your typical do your sub the you like Sub Wayish place but it has way better tasting food and you can get Quesadeas and Pita's with the same topping selection as you have with the Sub's they can also grill your food with no extra fee as well as add special sauces and dressings Checkers:It's apparently a sister company to Rallys wich I've never had but this places food is superb great burgers even better fries great quility just one downside it's confusing as heck to order from them they have a weird combo system that makes a simple order very hard but they do prepare your food fast this is a place I highly reccomend.

I haven't eaten at too many different restaurants outside of the major chains like McDonalds and Subway, but I can recommend a few more obscure ones...
Conway's Red Top (Colorado, maybe others?) - A regular sit-down-and-order restaurant, but their specialty is the Red Top burger. This thing is HUGE, probably twice as big as the biggest Big Mac. It's the whole meal pretty much (though they also offer half of one for those with smaller stomachs). Conway's is a pretty nice place overall...not exactly fast food, but it's not really meant to be, anyway.
Chevy's (Pacific Northwest - Oregon, maybe Washington and others?) - a Mexican restaurant that specializes in making everything fresh the moment you order it. The decor is like a collage of different art styles and old license plates and such. Most Chevy's restaurants have "El Machino", their tortilla machine, right in the middle of the restaurant, that sends fresh-baked tortillas on a conveyor belt straight into the kitchen. Their chips and salsa are great, and if the salsa isn't hot enough for you, they also offer Salsa Verde at no extra charge (and that stuff is HOT). I usually order the Taste of Chevy's, which is basically a small sampling of just about everything on the menu, along with a couple side dishes. Very few people can actually finish a meal there and still have room for dessert (of the 15 times I've gone, I've only managed that once - and their dessert is all the more rewarding for it). Sure, they're just a little expensive (I think prices range from 8 to 11 dollars for a meal) but boy is it ever worth it.

any mexican restaurant previously owned by McDonalds is automatically inferior to privately owned mexican restaurants (by mexicans).
But yeah, there may be too many in Arizona. I'm in Flagstaff and there are about 9 mexican places within walking distance (2 of which are really quite good) that range between $7-$12 per meal. Then again, I've seen more in Cali.
But in any case, it's a real pitty that you east coasters my never see an 'In-and-Out Burger' An Animal-Style 2x4=best burger in the Universe.
yeah. . .I can't really suggest much. I know next to nothing about what the East-Coast has. But I will tell you to investigate the smaller privately owned places. Just be sure to peep the menu first since they have the potential to be expensive.

We've got Chevy's out east. They're...OK. Decent food but practically every time I've went there, I've gotten pretty sick, so I tend to avoid it. Most people I know dig it for the margaritas. I remember Chi Chis was pretty cool when I was a kid but they seem to have gone under. I prefer Chilis overall even though they're not remotely Mexican. I really like that kind of food, but they're actually pretty rare around east, at least in my area, despite a heavy Hispanic population.
I was really in the mood for Indian today, but jesus it's expensive. The only place in the area was like $14 for an entree. It should totally be like Chinese food where you just pay $6 for a small portion and some rice, I think Indian food would catch on a lot more if it weren't so expensive. I mean, they're all over the place around here but they always seem empty the few times I go in.
I've heard about the legendary In & Out Burger, I've seen them when in LA but since I was on public transportation, I never got to stop in.

When I was in Vegas my senior year of HS, my dad (who travels to the west coast often) introduced me to in and out burger, and a mexican joint called "La Salsa", which as he put it was "like Taco Bell, except it has real mexicans working there." (This is back in 1999, keep in mind, when most Taco Bells was run by idiot kids). In and Out Burger was ok (I wasn't really into burgers at the time), but La Salsa was awesome.
Around here, we have good Indian and Thai (I went with Kurt to that Indian Place, and I destroyed by meal when it came out...I was fucking hungry), hell the town next to us had 5 Indian places listed in the entertainment book...but most of them are kinda pricey. Further west near where I work I've seen some more "chinese food type" indian joints where the prices are roughly that of chinese food (maybe a buck more or so), but I can't vouche for the quality.
I've also noticed, doesn't the West Coast seem to have more chains then the East Coast does? You guys keep mentioning In and Out Burger, and all these other places, but every "obscure" chain restaurant around here that I can think of I think is on the West Coast as well.
