Fatal Fury Special's end quotes are beyond amazing. DOO WAH! IIRC, it is the introduction of the ULTIMATE SNK insult, and it was first spoken by Kim: "I've heard about you. You don't look like a WEENIE." Absolute classic. I know weenie has been used by Heidern in KoF 98, and... fuck, lack of sleep isn't helping me recall any more. But I know it became a staple of trash talk amongst SNK.

Art of Fighting is the king of such talk though.
"Absolute Kyokugen, and don't you forget it, dweebenheimer."

Feint moves originated from Real Bout Fatal Fury, not Mark of The Wolves.

Wow... Blue Mary's video is simultaneously cool and hot. A nice bonus for us fans: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nA7NkmbvV_EAlso, no kidding those fubar SD sprites are freaky. Got any more of those to show? Also, what's with Karman Cole in an RBFFS loading screen?!

I guess I can grab more loading screen pics. They're pretty disturbing.
And that "Karmen Cole" pic is actually Lawrence Blood. They actually just look almost exactly alike.

Now I know why SNK doesn't have Karman in their games anymore; he's ironically a ripoff of one of their already existant character designs! Though, they don't use Laurence anymore either... Oh, and has anyone listened to the Arranged soundtrack of RBFFS/2? Excellent stuff. I would like to comment on how hilariously silly Duck's Arranged theme is. It has some mofo quacking rhythmically to the music about two minutes in. Total awesome sauce. ;D

I thought the Jin twins were brother and sister... but what do I know. You guys might want to mention that Cheng´s style is Tai Chi Chuan.
Good job ZZZ

Other things I think are missing:
-There´s no mention of FF2´s bonus rounds, or how they changed since FF1 and disappeared in FFSpecial. -FFSpecial is not only faster than FF2, it´s physics are improved to allow for better (but still simple) combos. Try Terry´s standing strong punch into Burn Knuckle in both version to see the difference. -Some characters got new moves on FFSpecial? I can´t think of any except for the bosses. -The background "bloopers" started off in FF2, although are very rare. -FFSpecial´s Super Famicom version, despite being buggy, plays almost exactly like the arcade version. The SNES port has a very distinctive timing issue when trying to pull out special moves. -There´s also no mention of the infamous "attack avoider" move that started in FF2 (or was it FF1?) and continued to show up throughout most of the series´entries, eventually making it´s way into "King Of Fighters" too.

Nice article. I just picked up the PS2 FF Battle Archives recently and I like it quite a bit. I agree the original Fatal Fury plays like a more polished Street Fighter. I like that game. I kind of miss those games where you have a limited amount of playable characters and fight a bunch of computer opponents.
I felt the article was way too harsh on the GB games and a bit too lenient on the GG version of FF Special in comparison. All of them are impressive for the systems they are on, but I didn't find FF2 unplayable or Real Bout FF Special to be jerky. I used Kigb and Meka, so they could differ from the real thing, but they are both great emulators.
Another thing I noticed, which should be mentioned in the article. The SNES port of Fatal Fury lacks the plane switching, but it's intact for the Genesis version. The SNES version seems to have lower music quality than the Genesis, though I agree the sound pales in comparison to the arcade for both versions. Genesis seems to have more of the sound effects intact, though.

Oh, and has anyone listened to the Arranged soundtrack of RBFFS/2? Excellent stuff. I would like to comment on how hilariously silly Duck's Arranged theme is. It has some mofo quacking rhythmically to the music about two minutes in. Total awesome sauce. ;D "WASH YO FACE! BRUSH YO TEEEETH!" Heh, that song does indeed rock. :D I own the arrange albums for both RB1 & 2. RB2 has a pretty good arrange album, but the first is just amazing. The arrangements are so freakin' good. The other singer on the album, the guy listed simply as "KEN", gives me goosebumps. I swear, he must be classically trained and doing opera when he's not doing video game music, haha. Anyway, I just finished this behemoth of an article, after slowly chipping away at it for a few days, and it was definitely worth the effort. I live with two complete SNK addicts, and I still managed to learn a lot. I was hoping that you'd poke more fun at the characters, though. :P I know you already did a lot, but there's just so much comedy fodder to work with, hehe. At the very least, I was surprised that you didn't at least make fun of Krauser and Franco Bash's voice clips. They're pure gold. And c'mon, they're voiced by some guy named, honest to God, BJ Love! You can't make this stuff up! There's an audio recording out there where BJ Love is just talking a bit about himself and his work, and it should be essential listening for any SNK fan. I mean, he says in it that he likes doing Krauser's voice because he's a really nice guy. Hahahaha, man, I'm making myself laugh just thinking about it. :) I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you about Marco's name change. Whoever came up with the name Khushnood Butt isn't a moron, he's a GENIUS, dangit. :( Heh. I think I have a slightly more positive view on the anime than you. None of the three movies were remarkable, but I thought they were all pretty decent and did a good job doing justice to their games. I actually go against the majority in that I'd probably say the theatrical release was the worst, despite it being the longest and having the biggest budget. I thought all the new characters were completely unlikable, and I was annoyed that most of the movie wasted its time following their dumb story that I really couldn't care less about. But even when they tried to work in the cast from the games, they did it so badly that the movie would've been better off if they didn't even try to squeeze them all into that useless club scene (and the inclusion of Geese was even more illogical, unless they were trying to set up another movie in a half-assed way). And even though the art is certainly shinier and fancier, it really brings out Obari's weird style even more. The pointy, angular faces really bug me, so I think I actually prefer the more primitive art of the previous movies (just for an example, Lily was INFINITELY prettier than the freakish looking Suila). I also think they took the fan service TOO far in that one. As for the previous two, I can't really decide which I like better. The first one has the most game-y feel, if that makes any sense. The second had slightly improved art, though, and it had more drama to it too. I actually really liked the part with Terry being so depressed and becoming a drunk. I think it was a bit of an edgy move for them to do that with such a loved hero. Tony was such a downgrade from Lily, though. I got this running gag about how Tony has "pant" instead of "pants" because of his ridiculous outfit. I loved it when he was pummeling that Terry-impersonating chubster, Ralphie-style a la A Christmas Story, though. I kinda prefer not having Mai around in the first move too, since her personality is really grating. Heh, that's enough rambling about the anime. Excellent job on the article!
