Ah Tyrian, I remember playing the hell of the shareware version back in the day, even more so when I got my hands on the registered version. Besides the main mode, I liked how when you went though the arcade mode, you kept get a new cheat code for a different type of ship. Playing as the foodship was amusing Never did get a chance to play Tyrian 2000 though.

Yeah, OpenTyrian's progressing really well. Oddly enough, none of the OpenTyrian developers knew someone had ported it to the PSP though, nor were they given credit, though that might've been a mistake.
As for the article, I only see two things that are slightly wrong: 1: Don't mispell DOSBox 2: I don't know why, but each time I read the article, I feel like it's telling me that Tyrian 2000 can play the included CD audio, which it can't.
Minor grammar complaint: "Furthermore, he weapon pickups"

The author revised the piece based on feedback from here, so he added a section on Zanac and other Compile stuff.

2: I don't know why, but each time I read the article, I feel like it's telling me that Tyrian 2000 can play the included CD audio, which it can't. Yeah, I second that statement too. I forgot to mention it, but no matter how hard I tried, I could never get the game to stream directly from the CD instead of playing everything from the sound card.

Links section, there should probably be a new line before "Lost Garden".
As for the Compile connection: the zip file the OpenTyrian developers got that contained the source code also had some written down passwords for Guardian Legend.

Can someone explain how the "smart bombs" work (where a bunch of small bombs appear, going in all directions from your ship); I'm assuming they're tied to the special weapons?

You mean the guided bombs? They're a regular front weapon although some ships have them available as a "special move". They're also a rear weapon (in two varieties) in Full mode.

I guess I mean as a special move then, how is it triggered? It seemed to be done by letting go of attack after a certain time had passed but I wasn't able to do it consistently.
It looks like the micro bombs but there's a lot more of them.

It's hold down fire, right, down, left, release fire, up + fire. That one in particular is tricky to pull off. You need to do it very quickly, and it's hard to do consistently. Every ship has a different set of them, and many of them are easier to do consistently.
On that note, the "secret" Captured U-Fighter in arcade mode has a weird bug/feature where if you go back and then ram into a boss, it'll get destroyed in one hit! I've never seen it referenced anywhere, and it is a little tricky to pull off without practice. I'm leaning towards feature though since it's still in Tyrian 2000.

Can't believe I did that by accident in a bunch of levels along the way.
