Ben There, Dan That! is a fun little adventure game with a really good, sketch pad style art style. www.zombie-cow.com/?page_id=17Its sequel, Time Gentlemen, Please! isn't freeware, but is only $5 and is usually packed together with its predecessor. Funny stuff.

Canabalt is a one-button game, complete with stylish greyscale graphics. You take the role of a little man escaping destruction, in an unstoppable run through the roofs of the city. Simple but very fun, a perfect cofee-break game. A portable version, playable offline, and an iPhone version sold for a few dollars, also exist. FlashPortableiPhone

Since the thread about The Black Heart even mentions one of their games, I'd like to spend a post for them. Bloodlust Software was a two-men indie developer whose few titles were characterized by over-the-top humour&violence (they love Troma movies). After their fist few games in the '90s, and a hiatus on emulators with peculiar names (who remembers NESticle, Genecyst and Callus?), they released their first productions as freeware, before making some more games. Their "magnum opus" is surely Timeslaughter, a fighting game heavily inspired by Time Killers, only better. Under the surface of rough and amateurish (yet still charming, in a twisted way) graphics, which could have used more animation frames, lies a game with fully voiced intro and character endings, multiple parallax, perspective scrolling on the floor, blood that stays on the playfield, visible damage on the characters, fatalities, a hidden boss, eight difficulty levels, two hidden characters (although they are bad sprite edits of two existing ones), several cheats... Not bad from a PC indie game in the mid '90s. While dated, it still plays more than decently (runs fine on DosBox if you set the right number of CPU cycles), the excessive gore crosses over to the humorous, and some endings are worth reaching. There was a sequel in production, which showed some great portraits an dbackgrounds, but nothing has been heard for a long while and it's probably dead. Other notable Bloodlust games are Noggin Knockers 2, a fun and gory (of course) variation of Pong, spiced up with special moves and individual character endings; and Wrath of the Sea King, an imperfect yet engaging mix of action and puzzle, based on the premise that you are an immortal and regenerate every time you are killed - so you have to die as less as possibile to see the entire ending sequence.

I noticed it wasn't posted yet. The Ur-Quan MastersThis is Star Control 2, whose 3DO version was released as open source by the original authors several years ago (the only thing they don't own anymore is the "Star Control" brand), then ported to Windows, with several elements of the original DOS version included as development progressed. The game is a mix of adventure, exploration and combat: starting with a single ship, the player explores the galaxy, gathers resources and allies (often through dialogues and diplomacy), and fights enemies. Despite the simple (sometimes even simplicistic) controls and basic gameplay mechanics, it is a deep and epic experience, with an advancing plot, and many alien races and ships to discover. An added bonus is the melee combat section, which can be played separately from the main game. Also check these mods for the game. One in particular fixes what is perceived by several fans as the biggest flaw: a time limit, which is discovered late during the game (many found it when it was too late already), and mars the pleasure of discovery and exploration. The mod changes the limit from 4 to 100 game years.

Super Cosplay War Ultra(site in Japanese or Chinese, but easily navigable) Well, it is exactly what the name says: a fighting game where the characters, while executing their attacks and special moves, dress as characters/mechas of several anime and videogames - the only other game similar to this is Capcom's Pocket Fighter. There's even a story for all the madness, about a freak accident that turns some people into Super Cosplayers. It is an otaku's dream - or nightmare, since many characters and attacks are quite grotesque. Since the first version in 2003 (the most recent, released last August after some years of silence, is called "Genkaitoppa" or "Overlimit"), the developers have added new content, and now there are dozens of characters available. Nice graphics, powerful soundtrack, and great playability, the controls are simple but that doesn't make the game simplicistic. Unfortunately, the only difficulty level is on par with the skill of the programmers - they are fighting game nuts, and it shows. The final bosses practically wipe the floor with everyone, and the normal matches are no cakewalk too. Still, it's lots of silly fun, especially in VS mode.

Blip & Blop: Balls of Steel is a Metal Slug parody: the main characters are, yes, two balls, fighting armies of Smurfs (who have killed Gargamel), Care Bears, Snorkies, even Pokemons and Lemmings in bonus stages... While dated, technically rough, and very difficult (better play with a friend, the number of enemies doesn't change), it's still a fun game for its concept only, especially if you hated some of the aforementioned characters www.acid-play.com/download/blip-and-blop/[Official site defunct] Another oldie is Glace, a colorful platformer starring a waterdrop-shaped, cute character. The main attraction are the odd, yet easy and appealing, mechanics for high jumps and wall jumps. Glace has to fall from some height to start bouncing, so jumps get higher and higher; and if he runs long enough, he'll gain momentum and, after the first accelerated jump, he will be able to bounce from wall to wall. It's easier done than said; the levels are long (maybe _too_ long) and, if you get enough bonuses, you can unlock alternate forms for the character, with special abilities. I found the game fun enough to warrant a second playthrough to ger them www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f1546.html[Yet another dead official site, unfortunately...]

Megaman/Rockman clones ahoy! NezumimanStarring... Mice. There's even a fridge-shaped one among the bosses. Oh well. The tribute is evident in the layout of some stages, which is taken straight from the classic game, but the game plays as good as the original, and it's not too frustrating. Rockman 7 FCDemake or the seventh episode, originally released on the SNES; this one is made like a NES game (I don't know if the author was inspired by the release of Megaman 9 or not). Hard HatA trilogy starring one of those little enemy robots, who rebelled against Dr. Wily. Otherwise, the gameplay is the same as the original series, as is the average difficulty. MegabotThis is the one that strays (relatively) the more from the original source, although it homages Capcom right before the title. A peculiarity is the recharge for weapons and jetpack - you have to roll the robot's wheel! Fun and challenging despite the somewhat quirky controls (be sure to master them first) and anonymous character and enemy design. Levels are very expansive and full of secrets. Reach a 96% completion before entering the final area, which represents the final 4%.

Dungeon Master: Return to ChaosOriginally started as a fan episode of Dungeon Master, thanks to its own editor it has come to include the orignal episode, its standalone expansion Chaos Strikes Back, and the official sequel. Has an entire dedicated section at www.dungeon-master.com/, where you can find several other clones, like the Chaos Strikes Back port for Windows and Dungeon Master Java.

Cloud intihuatani.usc.edu/cloud/From thatgamecompany, the creators of flOw and Flower. This game comes with the same beauty, tranquility, and innovation that its successors have. This is the opening to the game - The story focuses on 7 year old Jun who has asthma. Because of his disease, he cannot leave his ward without a doctor's permission and often becomes bored in his room. Jun forgets, "feeling of flying headlong through clouds." Fei (meaning fly in Chinese) is a 6 year old girl who Jun befriends in his ward. Fei asks Jun to close his eyes and tell her what he sees, Jun sees the expansive outreach of a cloudy horizon and the game begins. The game is essentially about combining clouds, flying through the air, getting rid of pollution, making it rain. Very simplistic and zen.

You know your url tag is broken, right? You don't need to put quotes on URL tags. www.continuitygame.com/ - Here's a better clickable link for those who don't feel like digging. This game is awesome.
