www.pioneersgame.com/Pioneers is a really fun, turn based game with minimal 4 color palette pixel graphics. It is very fun once you get past the somehow complex controls, and it still is pretty much a work in progress, meaning it is rough around the edges and kinda unballanced. Still, unique and fun!

I should check this thread more often. Some pretty fun stuff. Royals is a free, surprisingly deep micro game. I loved the AppleII inspiried look of it. At first, you have no idea how to play, and there are no instructions. But by trial and error, it is possible to understand quickly. It has also some rougelike elements, and a playthrough can be very quick. ashervo.itch.io/royalsI managed to beat this after a few times, altough there are multiple ways to do it, and I've only done one way ('charming' your way to the top). I highly recommend it if you got some time to waste. Very deep yet easy to get into despite the lack of instructions.

I'd say it is surprisingly worthwhile to check itch.io from time to time. I'll post whatever I think is interesting on here, but there is just so much free, strange and unique stuff on there...

Layers of Fear is, finally, an interesting indie horror game in a sea of mediocre to awful releases that has made the genre one of the most mishandled by developers. Set in the early part of the 20th Century, it stars a rich painter who's now past his prime artistically, also due to several traumas he suffered over the years - in short: he's going crazy - but still wants to create his masterpiece by finding some essential "ingredients" for it. It should be clear from the beginning that there isn't much "true" gameplay: it mostly consists in moving around and triggering events - the inspiration from P.T. (the Silent Hills interactive trailer) is evident. Rooms shift around constantly, not just moving from one to another, sometimes just turning around is enough to trigger a change. Usable objects are few, but are interacted with like in Amnesia; there are a few keys and several written documents to be found in drawers. There are many tropes of horror games, like the classic jumpscares that startle the players with sudden noises and things being hurled on their faces. Several other scares, however, are much more creative and often in line with the art theme, so I never got tired of them, even when I knew something was going to happen, the game always managed to keep me on edge, which caused the tension to rise even more when nothing was happening. Part of the merit goes to the visuals which are not cheap-looking, the detail of the rooms is amazing at times, especially with some you are going to revisit more than once and show up in different states of chaos and disrepair, and some paintings are really freaky. Having to push and pull doors and drawers also favors the immersion. The current Early Access version seemingly amounts to about half of the future full game, since by that point you have found three out of six objects, and currently the developers intend to refine it and listen to player feedback before going on. Excellent as it is in this state already (taking its limits into consideration, of course - if you are in for survival horror or such this is not for you), there are some legitimate doubts about Layers of Fear's future. Tailoring it to the players is great on paper but the risk of pandering to a base that seemingly wants a string of jumpscares over any other quality is high. And in any case, I wonder if the devs are holding some aces up their sleeves, or if what was shown so far is all the best - I'd be disappointed if the second half turned out to be just a retread of the first. Finally, while any comparison to P.T. is in a positive way, sometimes it goes into plagiarism territory, especially with the female character. In any case, it's a surprise and a title to keep an eye on in coming months. Also a definite step up for a developer whose first title, a Bomberman clone, is rated among the worst games on PS4.

This one looks interesting. According to the creators it's a love letter to Paper Mario. Yet it has its own charm instead of being a Paper Mario wanabee. Demo also available.

Yet it has its own charm instead of being a Paper Mario wanabee. Probably because it doesn't resemble PM at all. Just looking at this, Paper Mario would've never come to my mind.

That's why I said "according to the creators". Because they said themselves that they were inspirited by PM. I also don't see much resemblance to PM.

The game "Furi" that got announced today reminds me a lot of Suda51's aesthetic. Thought people here might be interested.
