I think the best thing about Quantum Conundrum is that the professor is voiced by John de Lancie, better known as Q.

Locomalito is coming back! The Curse of Issyos is releasing a week from now but I just found an e-mail with a private early release of the game for people who, like me, donated to them in the past. A project that had been frozen long ago in favor of Maldita Castilla, this time round it's inspired by action platformers of the 8 bit era in a Greek mythology setting. Excuse me, I'm going to try it now.

Played Issyos for a while, it feels a bit less polished and not even the readme says that you can shoot arrows with Up + Attack or that the armor, beside reducing damage, has an effective shield when crouching - I assume the predictable classy PDF manual with the public release will do. Anyway, due to the status bars and the character's jumping pose, it feels like "Greek Castlevania", with influences of other games of the era. Some levels are linear while others need exploration to find keys, the three in Level 2 are in random spots throghout. After that, you can go to a short forest stage and some places with people to use collected gold coins to buy something. You meet armed skeletons, giant scorpions and an animated colossal bronze statue - another explicit inspiration are the stop motion works of Ray Harryhausen. That colossus is the part I like the least so far, you are chased and must make your way by destroying stone blocks, but they require so many hits it easily becomes frustrating, rather than challenging. It is also to see if it follows Maldita Castilla in having a noticeable difficulty spike after the first levels, but it's just another Locomalito game, in the best sense. Since we are in the theme, Alientrap released Apotheon Arena, a free multiplayer version of the game. The visual style is always fantastic, but I wonder if they fixed the clunky controls and floaty physics so problematic in the original. Their shtick seems to be gorgeous 2D visuals, interesting gameplay ideas and loose controls: I tried their latest title, Cryptark (currently in Early Access) and that problem is there as well, even if lessened by the gameplay now going for 360° movement; once again, I hope it gets better by the final version.

Has anyone here played The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians? Looks like a Legend of Grimlock clone, but I wonder if it's any good.

Galax was released over a decade ago (although it has received a few updates up until 2012 to solve any compatiblity problems with newer versions of Windows) and it still holds a special place among many shmups I've played. There is no power-up system: by locking on enemies, the ship can hack into their systems. Z and X shoot, while C activates the radar. Once locked on, you are defenseless and have a couple seconds to input one of the three hacks, which are also associated with specific colors: - Freeze, Z-X-C (yellow) - the simplest and most commonly used, it deactivates enemy systems. You also get extra points if your shots connect with affected enemies. - Crush, Z-Z-X-C (purple) - Causes enemies to self-destruct, although it doesn't work on several ones, and big enemies take more time to explode. - Change, Up-Down-Z-X-C (blue) - Converts enemies to your side and their shots become blue, damaging their former allies. Of course it doesn't work on bosses but sometimes their weapons can be turned against them. There's also a rechargeable bomb: hold C to have the radar active but not enter an hack, press X to cycle targets and finally release C to strike. Beside a few points where you have to enter a specific hack to disable barriers, the hacking system would not be really necessary but it would be crazy not to use it, because it's just so fun and rewarding - managing the spaces between enemy waves is essential, and there are also special bonuses for specific feats: for example, large ships in the first level release air mines and if you are quick to use Change, the mines will destroy them. While some backgrounds are drab, the visuals are neat and make the game look like it belongs to an arcade in the mid 1990s. The biggest criticism you can point at Galax is for its low difficulty, each life has plenty of energy and you can set to have 11 lives and 9 credits in the options. However, it's so original - I honestly don't recall anything like that in a shmup - that it absolutely deserves to be played, and beside its main gameplay gimmick, it's also quite "oldschool", a blessing in case you're allergic to the Bullet Hell school.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul (Steam version) is free on Square Enix online store. Featuring David Bowie. I wonder if that has something to do with it? I really enjoyed the game back in the day, even if more so due to the premise and atmosphere than the actual gameplay.

I know we have many Souls fans here so perhaps you guys may like something I just heard about called Darkmaus. It is pretty much a top down Dark Souls only with a really eerie art style and, well... mice. Otherwise it seems its main gimmick is when you die your ghost will stick around and help out. Supposedly you can get a small platoon of them and outfit them as well. I guess maybe you could call it a Redwall and Dark Souls crossover or something. (disclaimer, I don't know a sticking thing about Redwall) Thinking I may pick it up sometime myself. store.steampowered.com/app/406130/
